Patriot League Football Release - 9.28.09
Sept. 28, 2009 Center Valley, Pa. - Bucknell will try to make it a four-way tie at the top of the Patriot League football standings when the Bison open their League schedule at home against Georgetown on Saturday. Georgetown (0-4, 0-2) at Bucknell (2-2, 0-0) Series Bucknell,11-9-1 Georgetown Head Coach Kevin Kelly, Springfield, 1982 Bucknell Head Coach Tim Landis, Randolph-Macon, 1986 Bucknell opens its Patriot League schedule at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium against Georgetown on Saturday, with the Hoyas looking for their first overall and League win of the year...The series has been dominated by the road team, with the visitor winning in each of the past four seasons...The last two games were decided by a field goal, with Bucknell winning, 27-24, at Georgetown last year and the Hoyas scoring a 20-17 win at Bucknell in 2007...That is the last Patriot League victory for the Hoyas, who are trying to snap a nine-game League losing skid...Three of the last four matchups have been decided by a field goal, including Georgetown scoring a 19-16 win in overtime in Lewisburg in the 2005 season opener...Bucknell has a 5-3 advantage over the Hoyas in Patriot League competition...The Bison are trying to make it a four-way tie at the top of the Patriot League standings, and win their League opener over Georgetown for the second year in a row. Georgetown The Hoyas could not rally from a 14-3 fourth-quarter deficit and fell to Howard, 14-11, at home on Saturday...Isaiah Kempf threw a touchdown pass to Dishon Hughes to cut the score to 14-11 with 8:20 left, but was intercepted on the final drive with a chance to tie or win the game...The Hoyas were playing Howard for the second year in a row after winning the matchup of Washington, D.C. schools last year...It was the first loss in four tries for a Patriot League school against Howard...Charlie Houghton averaged eight yards per carry in rushing for 55 yards and also caught four passes for 24 yards...Nick Parrish had his second-straight double-digit tackle game with 10...Kempf threw for 232 yards and completed 23-of-49 passes...The Hoyas are beginning a three-game Patriot League swing this week, with contests at Lehigh next Saturday and at home against Colgate on Oct. 17. Bucknell The Bison evened their record at 2-2 by holding on for a 17-16 victory over Marist on Saturday in Lewisburg...Michael Tonge blocked the extra point as Marist tied the score with less than a minute to play, and the Red Foxes missed a potential game-winning field goal in the final minute...Bucknell has a perfect 5-0 all-time mark against Marist, winning in each of the past five years...The Bison won despite giving up more than 40 minutes in time of possession and being outgained, 368-168...Bucknell won its third straight home game going back to last season...It is the first time since 2003-04 that the Bison have won three in a row at home...A.J. Kizekai became the eighth Patriot Leaguer to go over 5,000 all-purpose yards in his career, and now stands at 5,006...Bucknell goes back on the road at Penn next Saturday before a bye on Oct. 17. Harvard (1-1, 1-0 Ivy) at Lehigh (0-3, 0-0) Series Tied, 7-7 TV SE2, Fox College Sports Atlantic (tape-delay) Harvard Head Coach Tim Murphy, Springfield, 1978 Lehigh Head Coach Andy Coen, Gettysburg, 1986 Lehigh hosts Harvard on Saturday at Goodman Stadium in the second of a four-game homestand...The Mountain Hawks are trying to get their first win and end their longest season-opening losing skid since dropping their first four in 1982...The teams are tied, 7-7, in the all-time series, and have played competitive games in the past three years...Harvard notched a 27-24 win at home against Lehigh last season, while the Mountain Hawks earned a 20-13 victory in Bethlehem in 2007...Harvard also scored a 35-33 win at Lehigh in 2006...Lehigh won four straight matchups from 1998-2005 before that Harvard victory...Patriot League teams are 25-30 all-time against Harvard, including a 27-20 win for Holy Cross on Sept. 19. Lehigh Lehigh kicked off a four-game homestand with a 17-14 loss to Princeton on Saturday at Goodman Stadium...It was the second straight year that the Mountain Hawks lost by three points to the Tigers...Lehigh fell to 0-3, its longest winless start to the season since 1982...The Mountain Hawks trailed, 14-0, early in the second quarter but nearly mounted a comeback in the fourth...Backup quarterback Chris Lum scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 5:27 to go, but the Mountain Hawks turned it over on downs on their final possession...Lehigh held a 332-163 edge in total yardage and had the ball for more than 36 minutes...Matt Cohen had six tackles and matched a career-high with three tackles for loss and two sacks...He now has 12.5 career sacks and 37.5 career tackles for loss...Jay Campbell had a career-high 88 yards on the ground...Lehigh's homestand continues against Georgetown next week and concludes against Yale on Oct. 17. Lafayette (2-1, 1-0) at Yale (1-1, 0-1 Ivy League) Series Yale, 7-0 TV Lafayette Sports Network Lafayette Head Coach Frank Tavani, Lebanon Valley, 1976 Yale Head Coach Tom Williams, Stanford, 1992 Lafayette goes for its first-ever win over Yale when the teams meet in New Haven on Saturday...Yale holds a 7-0 advantage in the all-time series, winning the last meeting, 37-34, in Easton in 2006...That was the only time the teams have played since 1991...Lafayette did not score a point in the first four meetings with Yale, all in New Haven...The closest game in the series was an 18-17 Lafayette loss at Yale in 1990...Patriot League teams are 11-30 all-time against Yale, with a loss by Georgetown on Sept. 19. Lafayette The Leopards moved to 2-1 on the season by winning their first overtime game since 2001, a 20-17 victory over Penn at Fisher Stadium on Saturday...Lafayette took a 17-0 lead at halftime before Penn came back and tied the game, but Davis Rodriguez kicked a game-winning 28-yard field goal after the Leopards held on Penn's overtime possession...Rodriguez also hit the game-winner in Lafayette's 8-7 victory at Penn in 2007...Lafayette has won three straight against the Quakers, the second-longest streak in the 86-game series history for the Leopards...Rob Curley completed 18-of-27 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions before leaving with an injury late in the third quarter...Michael Schmidlein led the defensive effort with 16 tackles...He leads the Patriot League and is 11th nationally with 11.7 tackles per game this season...The Leopards last won in overtime on Nov. 11, 1995 against Fordham...Lafayette continues its stretch of Ivy League opponents by hosting Columbia next week and visiting Harvard on Oct. 17. No. 21/22 Holy Cross (3-0, 1-0) at Northeastern (0-4, 0-2 CAA) Series Holy Cross, 4-1 Streak Northeastern, One Win Holy Cross Head Coach Tom Gilmore, Penn, 1986 Northeastern Head Coach Rocky Hager, Minot State, 1974 No. 21/22 Holy Cross returns to action with a regional matchup, visiting Northeastern in the first meeting between the Massachusetts schools since 2006 and just the sixth of all-time...A win would give Holy Cross its best start since 1991, when the Crusaders finished a perfect 11-0 season...Northeastern earned a 24-14 win at Holy Cross in 2006, but the Crusaders have won the other four matchups...The 2006 game was the first meeting since 1989....The teams are playing at Northeastern for the first time...Patriot League teams are 6-8 against Northeastern, and no team has faced the Huskies since Holy Cross' matchup in 2006. Holy Cross The No. 21/22 Crusaders had a bye last week...Holy Cross' 3-0 start is its best since 2000, as the Crusaders knocked off No. 25/25 Harvard, 27-20, in their last action on Sept. 19...Holy Cross quarterback Dominic Randolph went over 11,000 yards of total offense (11,087), 100 touchdowns responsible for (101) and 900 completions (902) during the game...He is in the top five nationally in completions, passing yardage and total offense per game...Randolph holds eight Patriot League career records, and comes into the day 25 attempts away from breaking the mark in that category held by Lafayette's Marko Glavic (2000-03)....The Crusaders are in the top five nationally in team passing and total offense per game...Holy Cross is back on the road next week at Brown. Cornell (2-0, 1-0 Ivy League) at No. 25 Colgate (4-0, 1-0) Series Cornell, 48-40-3 Cornell Head Coach Jim Knowles, Cornell, 1987 Colgate Head Coach Dick Biddle, Duke, 1971 No. 25 Colgate will try to extend its best start to the season since 2003 when it hosts regional rival Cornell on Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium...It is the first home day game of the season after the Raiders won the opening three night contests in Hamilton...It is the first time since 1966 that both Colgate and Cornell are undefeated when the teams meet....Colgate claimed a 38-22 victory at Cornell last season, snapping a two-game series win streak for the Big Red...Colgate's Pat Simonds had 196 receiving yards and Nate Eachus had 241 rushing yards in last year's matchup, both series records for the Raiders...The Raiders had won the previous 10 meetings from 1993-2005...It is the first time the teams face off in Hamilton since 2005 after playing the last three and six of the past seven matchups in Ithaca...Colgate has won the last three meetings in Hamilton, and has not lost at home to the Big Red since 1992...Patriot League teams are 29-31-1 all-time against Cornell, with Bucknell losing to the Big Red on Sept. 19. Colgate No. 25 Colgate continued its best start since its national runner-up season in 2003 and won its Patriot League opener in a 20-12 victory over Fordham on Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium...Colgate is 4-0 for the first time since opening 15-0 in 2003, and just the second time in Head Coach Dick Biddle's 14 seasons...The Raiders opened the Patriot League schedule with a win for the second year in a row and sixth time in the past seven seasons...Colgate has won six of the last seven and 12 of the last 14 against Fordham...Quarterback Greg Sullivan had a big day for the Raiders, notching 298 yards of total offense and three touchdowns...He carried 21 times for 109 yards and a score, and completed 12-of-19 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions...Almost all of the passes went to Pat Simonds, who caught nine balls for 159 yards and a touchdown....Simonds became the fifth player in Colgate history to go over 2,100 career receiving yards (2,181)...He is 205 yards away from the Patriot League career top 10...Simonds has also caught a touchdown in seven straight games, and his total of 20 career receiving touchdowns is one away from the League's top 10 list...Jordan McCord carried 41 times for 192 yards in the game, and leads the Patriot League while ranking 10th nationally with 108 rushing yards per game...He has over 400 yards on the ground in the past two weeks....The Raiders ran for 299 yards against Fordham...Colgate leads the nation with 260.3 rushing yards per game, with Sullivan placing 30th in the country and second in the Patriot League with 89.0 rushing yards per game...The Raiders are also in the top 10 nationally in first downs, time of possession, third down conversion percentage and pass efficiency...The Raiders had seven sacks in the game and held a 41:30 to 18:30 edge in time of possession...Colgate will visit Princeton on Oct. 8 in a nationally-televised Thursday night game at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Old Dominion (3-1) at Fordham (0-3, 0-1) Series First Meeting Old Dominion Head Coach Bobby Wilder, Maine, 1987 Fordham Head Coach Tom Masella, Wagner, 1981 Fordham looks for its first win of the season when it hosts Old Dominion on Saturday at Jack Coffey Field...The Rams are trying to snap their longest season-opening losing streak since dropping their first seven in 2005...The Monarchs are playing as an Independent in their first year as an FCS program, and won their first three games before falling at home to Monmouth last week...Fordham will be the first Patriot League team to face both Old Dominion this week and Bryant at home next week. Fordham The Rams were in it until the final play but dropped their Patriot League opener, 20-12, at Colgate on Saturday...Fordham fell to 0-3 overall, continuing its longest season-opening winless streak since beginning with seven losses in 2005...Fordham fell to Colgate for the second straight time and sixth in the past seven years...Fordham dropped its League opener for the second year in a row and fourth time in the past five years...John Skelton threw for 250 yards and a touchdown in the game, and moved into a tie for 10th in League history with 49 passing touchdowns...He is also in the top 10 in passing yards, attempts, completions, total offense and touchdowns responsible for...He is in the top five nationally in passing yards and total offense per game...James Crockett led the Fordham defense with 11 tackles and a tackle for loss, and also forced and recovered a fumble in the endzone as the Rams stopped Colgate on a 4th-and-goal from the one in the first quarter...Patrick Murray booted a 73-yard punt in the game, the second-longest in Fordham history...The Rams are back at home against Bryant next week, and conclude their non-League schedule at Cornell on Oct. 17.
