Colgate dropped its season opener at Stony Brook, 42-26, on Saturday in the only action for a Patriot League team. The Raiders played that game without senior running back Jordan Scott, who is one of three Patriot Leaguers on major FCS awards watch lists to make their 2008 season debut over the weekend. Holy Cross senior quarterback Dominic Randolph, who joins Scott on the Walter Payton Award Watch after previously earning Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors, will open up against No. 4 Massachusetts and its Payton Award candidate, quarterback Liam Coen. Lafayette linebacker Andy Romans made the Buck Buchanan Award Watch list after earning Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors in the summer. The Walter Payton Award goes to the Most Outstanding Player in the Football Championship Subdivision, while the Buck Buchanan Award is given to the Top Defensive Player.

Defending Patriot League champion Fordham has been picked to repeat its title in 2008 in a poll of the League's head coaches and sports information directors. Fordham earned a first-place selection on nine of the 14 ballots, and received 68 points overall. Holy Cross had four first-place votes and 56 overall points to claim the second position, followed by Colgate with the remaining first-place vote and 53 points in third place. Lafayette placed fourth with 48 points, with Lehigh (35), Bucknell (18) and Georgetown (16) rounding out the preseason poll.
