Sept. 3, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Three Patriot League teams opened the 2012 football season with a victory over the weekend, and each of those squads had at least one student-athlete honored with a weekly award from the League on Monday.
Georgetown was the top recipient after a convincing 35-14 win at Davidson on Saturday. Nick Campanella received his first Offensive Player of the Week honor after rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns and also adding a receiving touchdown, while Robert McCabe lived up to his preseason hype by making 17 tackles and three tackles for loss to claim the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Fordham senior punter/kicker Patrick Murray was named Special Teams Player of the Week after a strong performance highlighted by a Patriot League and school record 52-yard field goal in a 55-0 win over Lock Haven on Thursday. Lehigh freshman wide receiver Derek Knott claimed the Rookie of the Week award after turning his first career reception into a 19-yard touchdown in Saturday's 27-17 win over Monmouth.
Patriot League Football Weekly Awards (Aug. 30-Sept. 1)
Offensive Player of the Week: Nick Campanella, RB, Georgetown
Jr., 6-0, 223 (Roselle, Ill./Montini Catholic)
Campanella scored four total touchdowns, more than any other FCS player on the opening weekend, to lead Georgetown to a 35-14 win over Davidson on Saturday. The junior rushed for 127 yards on only 12 carries and scored three touchdowns on the ground, and also turned his only reception of the game into a nine-yard score. The touchdown and rushing yardage total marked career highs, and his 53-yard score gave Campanella the longest rush of his career. Campanella earns the first Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award of his career.
Defensive Player of the Week: Robert McCabe, LB, Georgetown
Special Teams Player of the Week: Patrick Murray, P/K, Fordham
Sr., 5-7, 160 (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco Prep)
Sr., 6-2, 235 (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep)
The Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year lived up to his billing to open the season, as McCabe totaled 17 tackles and three tackles for loss in Georgetown's 35-14 win at Davidson. The tackle total marked a career high, besting his 15 against Colgate last season. McCabe paced a Georgetown defense that allowed -18 rushing yards, the top mark for an FCS team over the weekend, and gave up just one drive of more than 25 yards in the game. McCabe earns his second career Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week award.
Murray earned preseason All-America recognition at punter, but showed he can kick too by breaking a school and Patriot League record with a 52-yard field goal in Fordham's 55-0 blanking of Lock Haven on Thursday. He broke the Patriot League record of 51 yards, which was recorded most recently in 2005, and the Fordham mark of 50 yards. Murray also converted on a 20-yard field goal and all seven of his extra-point attempts to score 13 points in the game. He booted his only punt for 50 yards, and six of 10 kickoffs went for touchbacks. Murray is named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time, and first since 2009. Fordham student-athletes had been ineligible for Patriot League weekly awards the past two seasons.
Rookie of the Week: Derek Knott, WR/KR, Lehigh
Fr., 5-9, 160 (Orlando, Fla./Colonial)
Knott made his first career reception a memorable one, hauling in a 19-yard catch-and-run touchdown to give No. 11/16 Lehigh a 14-0 lead in an eventual 27-17 win over Monmouth on Saturday. Knott finished with two catches for 15 yards, and also returned a pair of kickoffs for 29 yards. He becomes Lehigh's first Rookie of the Week since 2009.
