It's been often said the second-string quarterback is the most popular player on a team. Perhaps. But I'd offer the modestly talented, all-effort, special-teams psycho is at least in the conversation.
Lost amid the 49ers' flurry of acquisitions this week was the signing of a potential fan favorite: Blake Costanzo.
Costanzo, 27, is listed as a linebacker on San Francisco's roster, but he knows he won't play defense in a regular-season game unless a meteor strikes the 49ers' linebacker corps.
