LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell football senior fullback Travis Friend (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was named to The Sports Network FCS Preseason All-America Team on Monday. The three-time All-Patriot League selection was named to the Third Team and was one of just three Patriot League players recognized.
A total of 98 players from 59 schools were on the Preseason All-America Teams.
Elected a team captain for 2013, Friend enters his senior campaign having appeared in all 33 games since 2010. He was a First Team All-Patriot League fullback last fall after earning second-team honors as both a freshman and sophomore. He is the first Bison offensive player to earn All-Patriot League recognition three consecutive years since Jabu Powell (1999-2001).
An integral part of Bucknell's offense who is used mainly as a blocker and receiver, Friend has 52 receptions for 303 yards and two touchdowns in his career. He has rushed 42 times for 102 yards and a pair of scores over that same span.
An economics major who attended the United States Naval Academy Leadership Conference this past winter, Friend earned the Bucknell Football Leadership Award and Tom Gadd Coaches' Award at the squad's postseason awards banquet last December. He was named the team's Strength and Conditioning MVP along with classmate Sean Sellers in the spring.
Friend is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member. He has started 25 games during his Bison tenure.
Friend and his Bison teammates are just over one month away from the beginning of preseason practice. Bucknell's first practice session is currently scheduled for the night of Aug. 10. The season-opener is Sept. 7 vs. Marist at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
