Matheny and Hoya Teammates Continue Second Week of Summer Workouts

June 16, 2008

Washington, D.C. - Members of the Georgetown University football team are back on campus, taking classes, working at various internships and finishing the day by taking part in workouts on the Multi-Sport Field as they prepare for the 2008 season.

Each week through the start of preseason camp, members of the Hoya football team will be sharing their thoughts on summer workouts and the coming season. Junior offensive lineman Dan Matheny (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI), who provides this week's update, is a two-year starter and one of the team's co-captains.

"This week on the hilltop we have really started to dig our feet in during workouts. Despite the heat, the "Men of Summer," as Coach Augie Maurelli has coined us, battled the weather to complete the first full week of summer workouts.

"The week began with our first encounter with the famous Exorcist stairs on the corner of 36th Street and Prospect Street and ended with our first conditioning test. As expected by each of us who have made the sacrifice to stay the entire summer, we all started the week strong and every one of us passed the test.

"This is a great way to start the summer, but by no means are we satisfied. Like Nick (Umar) said last week, we have a hungry group of guys here right now and we all expect the most out of each other and ourselves. We are confident that this core group currently training on the Hilltop will be ready to help take this team to its full potential.

"Everything we are trying to achieve in this program starts with hard work. Our goal is to be in better shape than our opponents. This is something we can control and we are on our way to accomplishing this goal. Winning is contagious and it begins in the summer and kicks off September 6 when we play Howard. We will continue to work to our fullest potential and snowball this effort through the summer and into preseason camp.

"Go Hoyas and Beat Howard!!

Georgetown opens the 2008 season on Saturday, September 6 at Howard, the first-ever meeting between the only schools in the Nation's Capitol that play football. The Hoyas' home opener is Saturday, September 27 against Patriot League rival Holy Cross.
