LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Ryan Gutowski (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), a member of the Bison football and men's lacrosse teams, received a special award at the University's annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Bison Club and held at the Elaine Langone Center on Tuesday, April 30.
Gutowski won the Bryan-Humphreys Award, presented to senior athletes "who have exhibited exceptional versatility within their sport, displaying outstanding achievement and the selfless determination to help the team succeed by contributing in a variety of ways." Gutowski shared the award with Tayler Siegrist of the field hockey and women's track and field teams, who was the female selection.
In addition to Gutowski, several other student-athletes were honored at the banquet, including the winners of the Christy Mathewson Award, given to the most outstanding athletes in the senior class.
An All-Patriot League selection in both football and men's lacrosse, Gutowski was a punter on the gridiron and is a faceoff specialist on the lacrosse field.
Gutowski was a First Team All-Patriot League punter as a junior when he broke the Bucknell record for punts in a season (79). The Bison record-holder for career punts (219) and a three-year starter, Gutowski is listed sixth in program history in career punt average (36.8).
Named Second Team All-Patriot League last week as a lacrosse faceoff specialist, Gutowski has come on strong as the season progressed, and his .524 regular-season faceoff percentage ranked third in the Patriot League. He won at least half his draws in seven of the final 10 regular-season contests, including a 58.3 percent clip over the final six games. Gutowski went 11-for-16 with eight ground balls in the big win at No. 2 Cornell. He logged a career-high nine ground balls against Drexel, and picked up eight in five other games. His 75 ground balls on the season lead the team.
Gutowski's 278 career faceoff wins are third-most in Bucknell history, and his 144 career ground balls rank sixth.
