Washington, D.C. - Under cloudy skies on a cool and rainy day in April that had the feel of a late October day, the Georgetown University football team closed out two weeks of practice with the annual Spring Game. The Blue topped the Grey, 10-7, in front of several hundred family, former players and fans at the Multi-Sport Field.
First-year Head Coach Kevin Kelly and his staff split the team into two squads, essentially pitting the first team offense against the first team defense. The Blue squad was led by Offensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator Jim Miceli, while the Grey was coached by Assistant Head Coach Rob Sgarlata.
The Blue got on the board first, with a 35-yard field goal from junior Eric Bjonerud (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) splitting the uprights with 1:09 left in the first quarter.
A long drive from the Grey in the second quarter was capped off by a touchdown run from sophomore Dean Duchak (Mahwah, N.J./St. Joseph's), with the extra point from junior Christopher MacGriff (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./University Liggitt School) giving them a 7-3 lead.
The teams traded possessions with a running clock through the second half and a touchdown run from junior Kyle Van Fleet (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) gave the Blue a 10-7 lead that would provide the final score.
Junior quarterback Matt Bassuener (Port Edwards, Wis./Port Edwards) split time leading both squads and had a strong outing. He completed a 20-yard pass to sophomore Anthony Homsey (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) and also threw a 25-yard pass to Duchak.
Sophomore Gunner Coil (Round Hill, Va./Mercerburg Academy) caught a 14-yard pass from Bassuener and sophomore Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) ran for 13 yards on an option toss.
On the defensive side, freshman Willie Bodrick (Atlanta, Ga./Benjamin E. Mays), playing for the Blue team, picked off a pass from Bassuener in the third quarter and ran it back 30 yards.
At halftime, Kelly gathered his team on the near sideline in front of the stands and announced team awards for the winter and spring workouts and the team's captains for the upcoming 2007 season.
Sophomore wide receiver Brian Newman (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) was selected as the Most Improved Player on the offensive side, while sophomore Anthony DiTomasso (Short Hills, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) earned the most improved award on the defensive side.
Last year, the coaching staff selected one captain apiece on each side, but this year chose two. On the defensive side, junior defensive tackle Nnamdi Obiako (Bladensburg, Md./Bladensburg) and junior defensive end Stephen Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) were selected as captains. On the offensive senior, Bassuener and Van Fleet were selected as the team's captains.
