Washington, D.C. -
Team-bonding is a major part of any sport. The thinking is that by getting teammates together in workouts or in activities outside of their given sport, a greater sense of unity will develop. Some teams have gone bowling, some have participated in paint ball games and others have done some other type of outdoor activities.
After the conclusion of the 2006 football season, Georgetown Head Football Coach Kevin Kelly, along with Linebackers Coach Luke Thompson and Strength and Conditioning Coach Augie Maurelli, the Hoyas set out on preparations for the 2007 season. The Hoyas finished Kelly's first season at the helm of the program with a 2-9 record. The team loses several key seniors to graduation, but a young nucleus returns to the program next year and Kelly wanted to do something different in his first full season at the helm of the program.
What Kelly, Maurelli and Thompson came up with was the Super Strength Olympics. Held at the conclusion of the team's winter workouts on March 1, the Super Strength Olympics was a one-day affair of eight events to determine a team champion.
In an effort to make the team take their workouts seriously, the team's players voted six team captains and split the team up among the offensive and defensive players.
Six different teams competed in a variety of events, including kick-board relays in the pool, beginning at 6:30 a.m. There was a three-point shooting contest, a dunk contest followed by a truck pull and a mystery contest, which ended up being a hot dog-eating contest. The final three events were a 240-lb relay, 4x100 relays and a team tug of war, held on the Multi-Sport Field.
