Hoya Notes -
From The Desk of Kevin Kelly
Dear family, friends and fans,
Last week, we held our annual Super Star Olympics, the culmination of our winter training program. The Super Star Olympics is a fun, competitive event and a reward to our guys after a hard winter of early morning workouts. This year, our work in the weight room has probably been the best since I've been at Georgetown. Coach Carl Johnson and the sports performance staff did a terrific job helping our student-athletes reach their goals of getting bigger, faster and stronger, while Dustin Wharton, Daniel Sprotte and Jordan Richardson each set records in the weight room, so the day of fun was earned.
Six teams competed in seven different events on Thursday morning. Events ranging from contests in the weight room, on the basketball court, eating donuts, pulling a van loaded with teammates and on Multi-Sport Field for a tug-of-war. Congratulations are in order for the overall team competition winner, that included Nick Alfieri, Mitchell Black, Hunter Books, Xander Carpousis, Will Carrol, Thomas Gallagher, Harrison Glor, Matt MacZura, Malcolm Caldwell-Meeks, Kyle Nolan, Matthew Satchel and Dustin Wharton.
Moving forward, we are all excited for the start of spring practice, beginning on March 19. We have 15 scheduled dates, including three Saturday scrimmages with the first on April 6. From a coaching standpoint, it is exciting to have the amount of veteran leadership that is present on our roster. We have 29 seniors and over 75 players returning from the fall, the largest group we've had.
Spring practice will wrap up in April when we host Georgetown Football Weekend. We send off our graduating seniors with a reception with their families on Friday, April 19. The next day, Saturday, April 20, we will hold our banquet at Leo's, beginning at 2 p.m. and then play our annual Blue & Gray scrimmage at 6 p.m. on Multi-Sport Field. All of our practices and scrimmages are open to the public.
This spring will feature some changes to our coaching staff. Thurston Childrey will move to offense and coach wide receivers and Alex Kolt will move to defense and coach the defensive lineman. Both Childrey and Kolt have been a vital part of our staff during the past two seasons and these promotions are well deserved. Rob Sgarlata will now be a walk-around defensive coordinator and also spend time with our defensive linemen, as Kevin Doherty will work with our defensive backs and I will work with the linebackers.
Finally, I wanted to give a special thanks to Mark Rountree, who will be moving on to Miami University in a few weeks. Mark has been the football administrator for the past few years and has been a huge part of our recent success. He will be sorely missed, but his contributions to this program will not be forgotten. We all wish Mark the best of luck with everything moving forward!
Win the Day!
