Center Valley, Pa. - The postseason recognition is still rolling in from media outlets covering the Football Championship Subdivision, and six Patriot Leaguers were honored in the the past week as three different organizations announced their 2011 awards.
Four Patriot Leaguers were named to the inaugural College Sports Journal All-America Team, and Lehigh senior quarterback Chris Lum took home the organization's FCS Offensive Player of the Year award. Lum was joined on the All-American list by his teammate, junior wide receiver Ryan Spadola, as well as Georgetown senior defensive end Andrew Schaetzke and Bucknell senior defensive back Bryce Robertson. College Sports Journal selected 63 players, to signify the 63 scholarships awarded to teams playing at the FCS level. There was also an honorable mention list, which included Lehigh senior wide reciver Jake Drwal and linebacker Mike Groome as well as Fordham junior punter Patrick Murray.
College Sports Journal also released a 40-man FCS All-Freshman Team, with Holy Cross' Matt Fava as the long snapper.
Lum and Schaetzke made the All-FCS Football Network Team, which consisted of just 24 players total.
Robertson and Murray were also honored by College Football Performance Awards as top players at their position. Robertson was named the Elite FCS Defensive Back, while Murray won the FCS Punter Award. The goal of the CFPA is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
With the exception of Fava, who received his first recognition of the year, the honors were nothing new to the Patriot League recipients. Lum was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, finished second in the Walter Payton Award voting and earned All-America honors from multiple organization. Schaetzke became the Patriot League's ninth consensus All-American in addition to receiving the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year Award and finishing fourth in the Buck Buchanan Award voting as the top defensive player in the FCS. Robertson and Murray have both received multiple All-America honors for their performance in the fall.
