The Georgetown University football team (5-5, 2-2 Patriot League) turned in a stifling defensive performance, holding Bucknell University (2-8, 0-5 Patriot League) to just three points and 168 total yards, to earn a 10-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The win was the Hoyas first home win over Bucknell since 2003, GU's first Patriot League victory.
Senior linebacker Robert McCabe (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern Prep) broke his own Georgetown single-season tackles record, finishing with 12, including two sacks and two tackles for loss. McCabe has 144 tackles through 10 games this season.
"Defensively we wanted to take it to them from the start and stop their run game," McCabe said after helping GU hold Bucknell to 2.2 yards per carry. "I feel like working off of Lafayette, this was our most complete defensive game from the first quarter to the fourth quarter and I was proud of all of our guys."
Sophomore linebacker Dustin Wharton (LaVale, Md./Allegany) had nine tackles a pass breakup and a forced fumble, while sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Richardson (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) had seven tackles, as GU forced Bucknell to an 0-for-11 day on third down conversions and 0-for-2 on fourth down conversions.
On offense, sophomore wide receiver Kevin Macari (Stamford, Conn./New Canaan) turned in another strong performance, catching a game-high seven passes for 71 yards and the only touchdown, a 28-yard second quarter reception, for his ninth touchdown of the season. Freshman running back Jo'el Kimpela (Kinshasa, D.R. Congo/Euless Trinity), had a career-high 126 all-purpose yards, including 98 on the ground on 19 carries, in his first game after earning Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on October 29. Sophomore quarterback Stephen Skon (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) came in during the Hoyas third offense series, after starter Kyle Nolan was injured, to complete 19-of-29 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown pass.
Macari helped set up the Hoyas first score, returning a punt 25 yards into Bucknell territory, after the defense forced the Bison to go three-and-out on the game's opening possession. Nolan worked the Hoyas inside the 10-yard line, to set up a Matt MacZura
(Cranberry Twp., Pa./Central Catholic) 20-yard field goal, giving the Blue & Gray a 3-0 lead.
Georgetown extended the lead midway through the second quarter, as Skon drove 80 yards, highlighted by a 19-yard completion to Macari, a 16-yard completion to Max Waizenegger (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) and a 25 yard third down completion to Zack Wilke (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's). On the ninth play of the drive, Skon found Macari in the right corner of the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown pass to take a10-0 lead with 6:37 remaining in the first half.
Bucknell's Matt Steinbeck intercepted a pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Bison field position in Hoya territory. Seven plays later, Sean Cobelli connected on a 37 yard field goal to cut GU's lead to 10-3 with 8:47 left in the game.
The Hoyas' defense held strong, not allowing another first down the rest of the way, as Stephen Atwater (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) got into the backfield to make a tackle for loss on a third down and short on Bucknell's following series. Sean Campbell (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) sacked Bucknell's Brandon Wesley in the Bison's last possession to help GU hold on for a 10-3 win to even their record at 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League.
