Navy's Tilman Dunbar
Dec. 28, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Bucknell and Colgate returned from their holiday break with impressive victories on Friday, with the Bison topping Loyola University Maryland 66-46 and the Raiders throttling Binghamton 74-47.
Navy fell 71-61 at home against Albany in its first action in nearly a week.
Bucknell (12-2) became just the third team in Patriot League history with 12 non-League victories in the regular season, joining Fordham (1990-91) and Lehigh (2011-12). The Bison fell behind early, but closed the first half on a 20-5 run to open up a 34-23 lead at the break. Bucknell extended the lead throughout the second half as it clamped down defensively for the 20-point win, holding Loyola (Md.) to 35.7% shooting from the field and just 1-of-12 from three-point range. Mike Muscala led the Bison with 29 points on 13-of-21 from the field and also pulled down eight rebounds. Bryson Johnson scored 11, while Cameron Ayers and Joe Willman each added 10. The Bison made 26-of-53 shots and 13-of-14 at the free throw line as they rebounded from a loss at Princeton last Saturday. Bucknell finished the 2012 calendar year with a 28-6 record. The 12-2 record equals the 1901-02 and 1983-84 teams for best 14-game starts in program history.
Colgate (4-9) snapped a six-game losing streak with an easy 74-47 win at home against Binghamton. The Raiders grabbed the lead with an 11-0 run midway through the first half, extended it to 40-25 at halftime and opened the second half with 10 straight points to effectively put the game away. Murphy Burnatowski led the way with 23 points, while Brandon James scored 12 as 11 different players scored for the Raiders.
Despite another fine effort from freshman Tilman Dunbar, Navy (6-8) could not overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and fell 71-61 at home against Albany. The Mids got as close as 51-45 with under eight minutes to play, but Albany responded with an 8-2 run and led by double digits the rest of the way. Dunbar led the Mids with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Brandon Venturini scored 14 points and Worth Smith added 10.
The other five Patriot League teams return to action on Saturday, with Holy Cross at Boston College, Army at Texas A & M (Fox Sports Southwest), American at No. 6 Kansas (ESPN Full Court), Lafayette at Stanford (Pac 12 Network) and Lehigh hosting Bryant.
