CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Home dominance continued for Patriot League teams over the weekend as Bucknell topped La Salle 74-66 on Saturday after Army opened the weekend schedule in impressive fashion with a resounding 96-67 victory against Maine on Friday.
Patriot League teams are a combined 25-6 at home this season.
In its first action in 10 days, Bucknell (9-1) showed no rust in jumping out to a 12-point halftime lead. La Salle cut the Bison advantage to 47-44 with 11:01 to go, but Bucknell responded with a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to pull away and led by at least seven points the rest of the way. Joe Willman and Mike Muscala led the way with 18 points apiece, while Willman also added a career-high 12 rebounds and Muscala had seven rebounds and a team-high six assists. Ryan Frazier scored 11 points off the bench. The Bison have now joined the 2005-06, 1956-57 and 1939-40 teams as the lone Bucknell squads in the last 84 years to start a season 9-1.
Army (5-5) improved to 3-0 at home, and ran the Patriot League's combined home mark to 24-6. The Black Knights led 24-22 with just under nine minutes to go in the first half, then closed the period with a 30-6 stretch to effectively put the game away with a 54-28 halftime lead. Five players scored in double figures, as Kyle Wilson had 18, Ella Ellis added 17, Larry Toomey and Kyle Toth each scored 11 and Josh Herbeck pitched in 10. It was Army's last game before a week-long exam break.
With every other school still on exam break, Bucknell will be the next team with a game when it visits St. Francis (Pa.) on Monday.
