Center Valley, Pa. - Every Patriot League men's basketball team has won at least three games on the season after Army and Holy Cross notched victories on Saturday.
The Black Knights took an impressive 70-50 win at Binghamton, while Holy Cross beat another America East opponent, New Hampshire, 62-57.
Two teams suffered heartbreaking losses, with Lehigh seeing its six-game win streak come to an end with an 81-79 defeat in overtime at Cornell and Navy falling 51-48 at Elon on a three-pointer in the final seconds. Bucknell also lost its matchup at La Salle.
Army (3-5) snapped a nine-game road losing streak and won by 20 points or more for the first time since 2009. Army used an 18-1 run late in the first half to take control of the game and led by double digits throughout the second half. Ella Ellis led the way with 20 points, while Julian Simmons scored 14.
Devin Brown scored 15 points, R.J. Evans totaled 14 and Justin Burrell added 13 to lead Holy Cross (3-5) to the 62-57 win over New Hampshire. The Crusaders put together a 9-0 spurt to go up 60-50 with under a minute to play. New Hampshire responded with seven straight points, but Burrell hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Despite 31 points from C.J. McCollum, Lehigh (6-3) had its six-game winning streak snapped in the overtime loss at Cornell. McCollum hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 66-66, but Cornell held off Lehigh in the extra session. Holden Greiner added 17 points, while Gabe Knutson scored 16 and pulled down 11 rebounds as Lehigh's junior trio played well yet again. The Mountain Hawks were hurt by 3-of-24 shooting from three-point range.
A defensive struggle ended on an unlikely shot, as Elon hit a 35-foot heave with two seconds remaining to beat Navy (3-6) 51-48. It was the fewest points the Mids have allowed since 2007. J.J. Avila led Navy with 14 points, including a pair of free throws that tied the score before Elon's game-winner.
A red-hot La Salle squad sent Bucknell (5-4) to its second straight loss in a 78-52 final. Joe Willman was the only Bucknell player in double figures with 14 points.
On Sunday, American will go for its seventh consecutive win when it hosts St. Joseph's at 8 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
