CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Holy Cross and Navy each held their opponents down on defense to pick up victories that highlighted Saturday's Patriot League men's basketball action.
The Crusaders topped New Hampshire 60-50, while the Mids knocked off Delaware State 63-53. Army fell 86-83 in double overtime at Yale, while American was nipped 58-55 at Florida Atlantic and Lafayette fell 72-53 at home against Princeton.
Holy Cross (4-2) got 19 points and eight rebounds from Dave Dudzinski in its win at home against the Wildcats. Holy Cross trailed 42-41 with 10:44 to go before scoring seven straight points and led by at least five the rest of the way. Cullen Hamilton added 11 points in the win while Malcolm Miller scored 10.
Navy (3-4) capped a busy week of play at the South Padre Island Invitational with the win over the Hornets. The Mids led 24-8 just over 13 minutes into the contest and went up by as many as 24 points in the second half before settling on the 10-point win. Brandon Venturini led the way with 14 points while Tilman Dunbar scored 11 as Navy limited Delaware State to 6-of-26 from three-point range.
Despite a career-high 37 points from senior Ella Ellis, Army (3-2) suffered a tough loss as Yale held off the Black Knights 86-83 in double overtime. It was a back-and-forth game throughout, with Army coming back from a five-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score on a pair of free throws by Andrew Stire with 23 seconds to play in the game. Ellis hit a pair at the line with 38 seconds left in the first overtime to send it to a second extra session. Yale went ahead for good on a three-pointer with 32 seconds left in the second overtime, and Josh Herbeck missed a three at the buzzer that would have sent the game to another overtime session. Ellis had 16 of Army's 17 overtime points, and finished with the highest-scoring game for a Black Knight player since 1996. Herbeck, Matt Gramling and Kyle Wilson each scored 10 points for the Black Knights.
Florida Atlantic scored the last six points of the game in the final minute, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 14 seconds, to knock off American (2-3) by three points. Daniel Munoz missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer as the Eagles fell. Stephen Lumpkins led the way with 17 points, while Tony Wroblicky scored 14 and John Schoof added 12.
Princeton jumped ahead of Lafayette 19-4 less than eight minutes into the contest on its way to the 19-point win over the Leopards (1-5). Dan Trist and Tony Johnson led Lafayette with 10 points apiece.
Two Patriot League teams are in action on Sunday, with Colgate at No. 6 Syracuse on Sports Net New York (SNY) at 1 p.m. and Lehigh visiting Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. C.J. McCollum comes into the game for the Mountain Hawks just 22 points away from the Patriot League career scoring record.
