CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Buzzer beaters did go in favor of Patriot League squads on Friday as Bucknell missed a three-pointer to tie and Navy saw a shot go in against it as time expired in heartbreaking losses.
The Bison (5-1) suffered their first loss of the year in a 60-57 final at Penn State. Bucknell held an eight-point advantage early and six at the half, but saw Penn State fight back and go ahead by seven with three minutes to play. The Bison got to within two at 59-57 on a three-pointer by Cameron Ayers with nine seconds to play. Bucknell had a chance to tie in the waning seconds after Penn State made 1-of-2 at the line, but Ayers could not hit another three as the Bison suffered their first loss of the season. Bryson Johnson led the way with 18 points, while Ayers had 14 and Mike Muscala finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.
Prairie View A&M's Carl Blair made a driving layup with no time left to hand Navy (2-4) a 42-40 setback in the opening round of the South Padre Island Invitational on Friday afternoon. Navy led by 12 points early in the second half before the Panthers rallied to take a 40-39 lead with 2:25 left. Brandon Venturini made a free throw tie the score at 40-40 with four seconds to play, but missed the second to lead to Blair's game-winning layup. Navy shot under 30 percent overall and from three-point range as Venturini led the way with seven points.
Five games will be played on Saturday, beginning with Navy facing Delaware State to wrap up the South Padre Island Invitational. American is at Florida Atlantic, Army goes to Yale, Lafayette hosts Princeton and Holy Cross welcomes New Hampshire to complete the afternoon schedule.
