CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Bucknell and Colgate each concluded their early-season tournaments with wins on Sunday, while Lafayette and Navy fell on the road.
The Bison improved to 5-0 by using a 19-0 run spanning the first and second half to pull away for a 69-52 victory over Division II Alabama in the final game of the 2K Sports Classic Subregional in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Mike Muscala had 14 points and was named MVP of the subregional after also leading the Bison to wins over host Niagara and New Mexico State. Bucknell is off to its best start since 2005-06.
Pat Moore scored a career-high 31 points to lead Colgate (2-3) to an 88-84 win over Coppin State in the consolation game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational bracket in Elon, N.C. Moore shot 11-of-15 from the field as Colgate finished at 56 percent overall (28-of-50) and from the three-point line (14-of-25). Murphy Burnatowski added 16 points with 10 rebounds for the Raiders, while Brandon James had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Damon Sherman-Newsome scored 13 points.
Lafayette (1-3) continued its daunting road trip with an 88-74 loss at Morehead State. Joey Ptasinski (23) and Bryce Scott (17) each put in career-high scoring efforts for the Leopards, but Morehead State closed the contest on a 16-6 run to pull away for the 14-point win.
Navy (2-2) fell behind by 20 points at halftime as UAB scored the final 12 points of the period and never looked back for an 82-63 win over the Mids. Brandon Venturini had 13 points to lead Navy, while Tilman Dunbar and Phil Guglielmo each added 12.
Two Patriot League teams are at home on Monday when American plays San Francisco and Lehigh hosts Fairfield as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off, which is also the home opener for the Mountain Hawks.
