Center Valley, Pa. - Bucknell and Navy each notched their first victory of the season on Sunday, with both squads hanging for a three-point win against Bryant and Longwood, respectively.
Bucknell held off a late Bryant rally to record a 59-56 victory. The Bison finished 1-2 in the World Vision Basketball Invitational over the weekend, also losing to host Providence on Saturday. Navy built a lead and held on late as well, as the Mids took a 79-76 win at Longwood behind a career-high 16 points from both O.J. Avworo and Romeo Garcia. Lafayette was the only other team to play over the weekend, with the Leopards falling at Sacred Heart, 81-70. Navy and Lafayette are both 1-1 on the season.
Three games will be played on Monday, including Colgate beginning its season at No. 12 Connecticut at 9 p.m. in a contest televised live on ESPNU. The matchup is the opener of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off, and Colgate will play either Hofstra or Yale on Tuesday in Storrs. American will raise its 2008-09 Patriot League Championship banner as it plays its home opener against Albany at 7:30 p.m., the first of a five-game homestand over the next 10 days. Lehigh is at Rider at 7 p.m. The Broncos just won at No. 18 Mississippi State, 88-74, on Friday.
Navy and Lafayette are at 1-1 overall, with Bucknell at 1-2. American, Holy Cross, Army and Lehigh have all dropped their only contest. To review the opening game from each team on Friday night, click here
