Lehigh's C.J. McCollum
Nov. 14, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A preseason full of awards and honors carried into the regular season for Lehigh senior guard C.J. McCollum, who was selected as one of 50 players on the 2012-2013 Naismith Award Early Season Watch List on Tuesday.
McCollum was named as a candidate for the Wooden Award last week to cap his run of preseason recognition. He was also a first-team Preseason All-America selection from the Associated Press, Sporting News and ESPN.com and earned a spot as a Senior CLASS Award candidate. McCollum was additionally selected as a Lute Olson Preseason All-American by College Insider, a fourth-team preseason All-American by CBS Sports and the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year for the third straight season.
The senior is off to a solid start in 2012-13, averaging a Patriot League-best 24.0 points to go with 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game through the first three contests. McCollum scored 36 points in the season-opening loss to No. 18/19 Baylor on Friday and was named Patriot League Anaconda Player of the Week for the 13th time in his career on Monday. He is up to 2,146 career points, just 78 away from the Patriot League record.
The 50-player watch list was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012-2013 college basketball season. The Naismith Men's College Player of the Year presented by AT&T will be awarded on April 7, 2013 in Atlanta. In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will narrow the list to the four finalists.
