Nov. 9, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The men's basketball season opened for seven schools on Friday, and two went on the road to earn impressive, hard-fought victories as Bucknell edged Purdue and Holy Cross won in the final seconds at Old Dominion.
Three players scored in double figures for the Bison, as Cameron Ayers tallied 18 points, Mike Muscala had his 25th career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Bryson Johnson added 14 in the 70-65 win over Purdue. Bucknell trailed by six points at the half, but went ahead for good with under five minutes to play and sealed the win with free throws by Johnson and Joe Willman in the final 10 seconds.
It is the second straight season that a Patriot League team defeated a Big 10 opponent following Lafayette's win over Penn State last year.
Freshman guard Cullen Hamilton hit the first of two free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining to break a 45-45 tie and lift Holy Cross to a 46-45 victory over Old Dominion on the opening day of the Liberty Tax Classic in Norfolk, Va. The Crusaders trailed 43-41 in the final minute before a Justin Burrell three-pointer gave them the lead. Burrell and Hamilton each scored 15 points while the Crusaders held the Monarchs to 0-of-13 from three-point range.
Navy snapped a 22-game losing skid with a 75-48 win over Division III Marymount. The Mids went on a 19-0 run late in the first half to pull away for good. Brandon Venturini led all scorers with 16 points, while Kendall Knorr added 13 and Worth Smith scored 10.
Despite 36 points from C.J. McCollum, Lehigh could not keep up with one of the top teams in the country and fell 99-77 at No. 18/19 Baylor. McCollum moves into second place in Patriot League history with 2,110 points, 114 away from the League record. His 32 field-goal attempts were the most-ever by a Patriot League player. The Mountain Hawks played without two starters, including preseason All-Patriot League pick Gabe Knutson.
Lafayette fell 76-65 in its home opener against St. Francis (NY), with Fran O'Hanlon coaching his 500th game at the school. Two Patriot League teams fell at Big 10 opponents, as Colgate lost 75-55 at Illinois despite 23 points from Murphy Burnatowski and American dropped a 72-36 final to Minnesota.
Army begins its season on Saturday by taking on Air Force in the All-Military Classic in Charleston, S.C., while Holy Cross continues play at the Liberty Tax Classic against Texas-San Antonio.
