CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League men's basketball teams are set to open the 2012-13 season on Nov. 9, and the first two months will feature a non-League schedule that includes 36 games against opponents which played in the postseason last year.
That slate has 15 games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams, and matchups with both of the national title-game participants. Lafayette visits defending national champion Kentucky as part of the 2012 Barclays Center Classic on Nov. 16 while American heads to runner-up Kansas on Dec. 29.
Defending Patriot League champion Lehigh opens its season against an NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier when it heads to Baylor on Nov. 9, the same day that Patriot League regular-season champion Bucknell ventures out west to face a Purdue team that made the Round of 32. Lehigh will also play at VCU (Round of 32) on Jan. 5, while Bucknell faces off with three more NCAA qualifiers when it takes on New Mexico State (Nov. 17), Missouri (Jan. 5) and Loyola (Md.) (Dec. 28), which will be joining the Patriot League in 2013-14.
Colgate will play a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from the BIG EAST when it visits Marquette (Nov. 11) and Syracuse (Nov. 25), while American will also play an NCAA squad from the conference when it makes the short trip to Georgetown (Dec. 22). Additional games against NCAA Tournament teams include Holy Cross at Harvard (Dec. 22), Navy at Norfolk State (Jan. 5) and Lafayette facing LIU-Brooklyn both at home (Nov. 12) and away (Dec. 1).
In addition to the matchups with NCAA Tournament teams, Patriot League squads have 21 games against teams that made either the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), College Basketball Invitational (CBI) or CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) last season. Among the high-profile games are road trips for American at Minnesota (Nov. 9) and St. Joseph's (Nov. 28) and Lafayette's visits to Minnesota (Dec. 22) and Stanford (Dec. 29).
As part of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Lehigh could also face off with CBI champion Pittsburgh on Nov. 13 and take on a range of teams that played in postseason events in subsequent rounds.
Additional matchups against teams from the "Big-Six" conferences include Colgate at Illinois (Nov. 9), Lafayette at Maryland (Nov. 20), Navy at TCU (Nov. 20), Holy Cross at St. John's (Nov. 21), Bucknell at Penn State (Nov. 23), Holy Cross at Providence (Nov. 27), Army at Penn State (Dec. 8), Colgate at Providence (Dec. 18), Holy Cross at Boston College (Dec. 29) and Army at Texas A & M (Dec. 29).
Patriot League teams also take on their usual assortment of opponents from regional conferences, including 25 games against teams from the Northeast Conference, 18 versus Ivy League foes and 11 against squads from the America East. The Patriot League won last year's season series with the NEC (17-9) and America East (7-4), while splitting with the Ivy League (9-9).
Patriot League teams combine to face off with opponents from 24 different conferences, with more possible based on results of in-season tournaments.
The Patriot League schedule begins on Jan. 12, with the League Tournament tipping off with the quarterfinals on March 6. The Patriot League men's basketball semifinals will be played on March 9 at 2 and 4:30 p.m. with the championship on March 13 at 7:30 p.m., with each of those games shown on CBS Sports Network.
