2013-14 Patriot League Men's Basketball Composite Schedule
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The men's basketball season is just a month away, and fans will get to see their teams play some attractive contests before the Patriot League schedule opens up after the New Year.
The 2013-14 season officially tips off on Nov. 8, and the first two months will feature a non-League schedule that includes a minimum of 19 games against last year's NCAA Tournament teams and at least 39 against squads which played in one of the four Division I postseason events.
The matchups against NCAA Tournament squads include a pair of games against teams that made last year's Final Four. Colgate heads to Syracuse for its annual matchup with the Orange on Nov. 16, while Holy Cross visits last year's runner-up, Michigan, as its final non-League game on Dec. 28.
Games against NCAA Tournament squads begin right out of the gate as Lafayette visits Villanova and Lehigh heads to Minnesota for openers on Nov. 8, and Holy Cross plays Harvard at TD Garden on Nov. 10 in its season opener. Additional matchups against NCAA Tournament teams in November include Holy Cross at North Carolina (Nov. 15), Colgate at Syracuse (Nov. 16), American at Ohio State (Nov. 20), Lehigh at Pittsburgh (Nov. 20), Bucknell at Albany (Nov. 23), Holy Cross vs. Belmont (Nov. 23), Army at Notre Dame (Nov. 24) and Boston University vs. LIU Brooklyn (Nov. 24). Lehigh also has the potential to face off with South Dakota State on Nov. 26, pending each team's result the day before in the Legends Classic in Brookings, S.D.
December's slate of action against NCAA Tournament teams includes Albany at Holy Cross (Dec. 4), Colgate at Georgetown (Dec. 7), Harvard at Boston University (Dec. 7), LIU Brooklyn at Lehigh (Dec. 9), Colgate at Albany (Dec. 14), American at St. Mary's (Calif.) (Dec. 19), Holy Cross at Michigan (Dec. 28) and Loyola Maryland at Miami (Fla.) (Dec. 30). Nine Patriot League teams play at least one non-League opponent that made the NCAA Tournament last year.
The schedule also features a number of additional matchups against teams from high-level conferences. The opening night has two such games as Colgate visits Wake Forest and Bucknell is at Stanford on Nov. 8. Other games against major conference or highly-regarded opponents in November include Bucknell at Penn State (Nov. 13), Boston University at Connecticut (Nov. 17), Navy at Virginia (Nov. 19), Bucknell at St. John's (Nov. 19) and Loyola Maryland at Connecticut (Nov. 26), with December's slate featuring Loyola Maryland at West Virginia (Dec. 2), Boston University at Maryland (Dec. 21), St. Joseph's at Loyola Maryland (Dec. 21), Army at Rutgers (Dec. 22), Lafayette at Seton Hall (Dec. 27) and Boston University at St. Joseph's (Dec. 29).
Patriot League teams also take on their usual assortment of opponents from regional conferences, with 19 games against teams from the Northeast Conference, 14 versus America East foes and 13 matchups with the Ivy League. The Patriot League won last year's season series with the NEC (17-9) and America East (8-3), while falling just under .500 against the Ivy League (8-11). Patriot League squads also have nine games against opponents from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and eight against the Atlantic Coast Conference, with seven of those versus teams who played in the postseason last year.
Patriot League teams combine to face off with opponents from 24 different conferences, with more possible based on results of in-season tournaments.
The Patriot League schedule begins on Jan. 2, with the League Tournament tipping off with the first round on March 3 followed by the quarterfinals on March 5. The Patriot League Tournament semifinals will be played on March 8 at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. with the championship on March 12 at 7:30 p.m., with each of those games shown on CBS Sports Network.
