ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- An eight-day trip to Alabama and Texas highlights the 2012-13 Navy men's basketball schedule released today by head coach Ed DeChellis. The slate features seven non-conference home games as well as an appearance in the 2012 South Padre Island Invitational over the week of Thanksgiving.
The Midshipmen open the season with a three-game homestand and conclude the 2012 calendar year with another three-game stand over the Holiday break. The Midshipmen face a pair of NCAA third-round participants (Norfolk State, Lehigh), two opponents from Conference USA, one from the Big 12 and a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent for the first time in school history.
The Midshipmen get their season underway on Nov. 4 with an exhibition contest against Division II Slippery Rock in Alumni Hall. The regular-season opener comes five days later when Navy hosts Marymount University on Friday, Nov. 9. Navy then concludes the homestand with match-ups against Siena (Nov. 11) and Binghamton (Nov. 14).
Navy will embark on its longest road trip of the season as it heads to the Gulf Coast for four games during an eight-day getaway for the South Padre Island Invitational, beginning with a Nov. 18 tilt against UAB in Birmingham, Ala. Two days later on Nov. 20, the Mids head to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on the Big 12's newest member, TCU. It marks the third straight year that Navy will have faced a Big 12 opponent as the Midshipmen took on Texas to tip off the 2010-11 season and battled Missouri a year ago in early December.
Navy travels to South Padre Island, Texas, one of the barrier islands off the East coast of Texas and just minutes north of the Mexican border, for a pair of games on Nov. 23 & 24 against Delaware State and Prairie View A&M. Navy has never faced either of the squads and will be playing a team from the SWAC (Prairie View A&M) for the first time in school history. Northwestern, Illinois State and Fairleigh Dickinson will join Navy, UAB, TCU, Delaware State and Prairie View A&M in the event.
Following the trip south, Navy will return for its only home game in a 25-day span when it takes on IPFW on November 28 in Alumni Hall in the first of two meetings between the two squads. IPFW has one of the most unique nicknames in all of college athletics -- the Mastadons.
Navy returns to the Gulf Coast by visiting New Orleans on Dec. 1 for a tilt with Conference USA member Tulane. The journey to the Big Easy is a return trip after the Green Wave visited Annapolis a year ago.
The Midshipmen will conclude their quick three-game roadtrip at Monmouth (Dec. 5) and Mount St. Mary's (Dec. 7), before returning home for a three-game stint against Bryant (Dec. 10), Northern Kentucky (Dec. 22) and Albany (Dec. 28).
Navy will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a return game to IPFW (Jan. 2) and 2012 NCAA Tournament third-round participant Norfolk State (Jan. 5).
Navy opens Patriot League play on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Lafayette. The league schedule proceeds as follows: Holy Cross (Jan. 16), at Army (Jan. 19), at American (Jan. 23), Colgate (Jan. 26), Lehigh (Jan. 30), at Bucknell (Feb. 2), Lafayette (Feb. 9), at Holy Cross (Feb. 12), Army (Feb. 16), American (Feb. 20), at Colgate (Feb. 23), at Lehigh (Feb. 27) and Bucknell (March 2). The Patriot League Tournament will be played March 6-13 at campus sites.
Lehigh (NCAA Third Round), Bucknell (NIT Second Round) and American (College Insider Tournament first round) were Patriot League representatives in the postseason a year ago.
Navy will return two starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team, as well as welcoming in seven newcomers. Season tickets and single-game tickets will be available for puchase at www.NavySports.com or by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY in the coming weeks.
