WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Thursday, April 4, Old Dominion University officially announced that Jeff Jones, American's men's basketball coach for the past 13 years, has been named ODU's men's coach.
"We want to thank Coach Jones for his wonderful contributions to the AU community and wish him the very best," said AU President, Dr. Neil Kerwin. "Jeff has represented men's basketball, AU athletics, and American University with great distinction, upholding the ideals of the Patriot League as a conference of competitive athletics and academic integrity. We thank him for his years of dedicated service to AU, and we wish him tremendous ongoing success."
Jeff Jones ushered in a new era for AU men's basketball, raising the profile of AU athletics and of the entire university. He led the Eagles to AU's first two NCAA men's tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. His teams played in five Patriot League tournament championships and won four regular season Patriot League championships. Coach Jones brought nine winning seasons to AU men's basketball, compiling a record of 212 wins and 182 losses. He recorded more wins than any other AU men's basketball coach.
"This is a bittersweet day for me. I'm very excited about the opportunity that awaits me at Old Dominion University, but I'm also sad to be leaving AU, a place I've called home for thirteen years," remarked Jones. "I'm taking many fond memories of players, coaches, members of the Athletics Department and AU community with me. My friendships here mean a great deal to me, and I want to thank everyone in the AU community and everyone involved with AU basketball for the tremendous time that I have had with you."
Sixty of his players earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections; 23 Eagles have gone on to professional careers; and 22 earned All Patriot League selection. Two of his players earned Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors (Andre Ingram 2004 and Derrick Mercer 2006), two Patriot League Players of the Year (Patrick Doctor 2002 and Mercer in 2009), and Coach Jones earned Coach of the Year honors in 2009.
Under the leadership of AU's newly appointed Director of Athletics and Recreation Billy Walker, AU will begin a national search for its next men's basketball coach. The objective will be to continue the trajectory of success that American University has come to enjoy and expect. During this brief transition, Kieran Donohue, associate head coach, will serve as the key liaison for the men's basketball program's internal and external relations.
