CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - One did it with offense while the other stepped up on defense, but in the end Lafayette and Colgate each did enough to prevail in first-round games of the Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament on Monday.
The No. 9 seed Leopards (11-19) got hot in the first half and stayed that way in an 84-71 win at No. 8 Loyola Maryland (11-19), while the No. 7 seed Raiders (13-17) clamped down to hold off No. 10 seed Navy (9-21) 57-51.
Lafayette advances to play at No. 1 seed Boston University in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, with No. 5 Army at No. 4 Bucknell on the other side of the bracket. Colgate will next head to No. 2 American, with No. 6 Lehigh at No. 3 Holy Cross also in the bottom bracket. All four quarterfinals will be shown on Patriot League Network, with 7 p.m. tip-offs in three games and a 7:30 p.m. start at American.

Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament - First Round
No. 9 Lafayette 84 at No. 8 Loyola Maryland 71
*Lafayette set a Patriot League Tournament record by shooting 63.6% from the field and pulled away for an 84-71 win over Loyola Maryland in the first round on Monday.
*The No. 9 seed Leopards advance to play at No. 1 Boston University in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday night.
*Lafayette started 2-of-8, then made 26-of-36 shots the rest of the way to pull away for the win.
*The Leopards were down 22-19 with under seven minutes to play in the first half before closing the period with a 23-13 stretch for a 42-35 lead at the break.
*Lafayette went up 12 early in the second half, but Loyola fought back and used an 11-2 run to get within 53-50 with 13 minutes left.
*Lafayette would not let the Greyhounds get any closer, scoring six straight points to go back up 11 with under eight minutes to play and staying ahead by eight or more in the 13-point win.
*Seth Hinrichs led four Leopards in double figures with 22 points, while Joey Ptasinski had 18, Nick Lindner scored 14 and Bryce Scott finished with 12.
*The Leopards won their first game in the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth consecutive year.
*Lafayette has now won four Patriot League Tournament games on the road in the last four years.
*Loyola fell in its first Patriot League Tournament contest despite a career night from Jarred Jones with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
*R.J. Williams had six points and 10 assists and directed an offense that put up 18 assists and turned it over only six times.
*Loyola could not keep up with Lafayette's shooting as the Greyhounds were 25-of-62 overall and 5-of-17 from three-point range.
*The Greyhounds' season comes to an end at 11-19, with Loyola losing seven of its final eight games.
at No. 7 Colgate 57, No. 10 Navy 51
*Colgate won a Patriot League Tournament game for the first time since 2009 by holding on for a 57-51 victory at home against Navy in the first round on Monday.
*The Raiders won their fourth straight game as they head to No. 2 seed American in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
*Colgate took the lead for good by scoring the last seven points of the first half for a 27-21 advantage at the break.
*The Raiders went on a 10-0 run to build the lead to 39-26 with 13:28 to go, but Navy would not go away easily.
*The Mids got the deficit all the way down to two at 53-51 with 13 seconds, but Damon Sherman-Newsome and Austin Tillotson each hit a pair of free throws to seal the win for the Raiders.
*Sherman-Newsome led the Raiders with 16 points, while Ethan Jacobs and Luke Roh each scored 10.
*Colgate shot 19-of-46 from the field and just 3-of-12 from three-point range, but had a strong game at the free throw line with a 16-of-20 clip.
*The Raiders also held the Mids to 20-of-57 from the field and 6-of-22 from long distance.
*Colgate won in the League Tournament for the first time since a victory in the quarterfinals at Navy in 2009, and improved to 4-2 against the Mids in the postseason tourney.
*The Raiders were playing at home in the League Tournament for the first time since winning in the quarterfinals and semifinals at Cotterell Court in 2008.
*Brandon Venturini had more than half of Navy's points with 26 in the game.
*Worth Smith was the only other Mid in double figures with 10 points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
*Navy finishes its season with a 9-21 record, and lost its 14th consecutive Patriot League Tournament game dating back to 2001.
