The Eagles won the Patriot League with a 13-1 mark in the regular season, claiming the top seed in the Tournament for the second year in a row. They are led by senior guards Derrick Mercer and Garrison Carr. Mercer was named Patriot League Player of the Year on Monday, while Carr earned his second consecutive First-Team All-League award. American Enters Exclusive Company in League Annals

By clinching the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, American become the first team since Lafayette in 1998-00 to earn the top seed in consecutive seasons. The Leopards are the only program to earn three straight No. 1 seeds, with Colgate (1995-96) and Fordham (1990-91) the others to do it in consecutive years. American is also the first team in League annals to earn sole possession of the regular-season title for two straight seasons. The Eagles will play as the No. 1 seed in the Tournament for the third time in eight years as a League member, with the other instance in 2002. American has captured a top four seed in each of its League seasons.

No. 1 Usually Ends Up No. 1

If history rings true, American has to like its chances as the No. 1 seed with home court throughout the Patriot League Tournament. The top seed has won 14 of the 18 League Tournaments, and has advanced to the title game every season. American continued that trend by winning the Championship as the No. 1 seed last year.

Repeat Is No Unusual Feat

Also in the Eagles' favor is the history of repeat champions in the Patriot League. There have already been six repeat champions in League annals, with just four champions earning only a single crown. Lehigh is the only Patriot League program to win one title but never repeat as a champion, a distinction the Eagles will try to avoid joining this season.

Army Captures Rare Home Quarterfinal Game

Army entered rare air in its Patriot League history by claiming the No. 4 seed in the Tournament and earning a spot as a host in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The No. 4 seed is Army's best-ever mark, and the Black Knights will play as the higher seed in the League Tournament for the first time when they take on Lehigh on Wednesday. Army will host a quarterfinal game for the first time since holding the first two rounds of the tourney at West Point in 1999. The other hosts are more common, as American is at home for the third year in a row, Holy Cross for the fourth in the last five years and Navy for the second straight season. The Mids are hosting for two straight years for the first time since 1997 and 1998.

Eagles, Bison Look To Extend Streaks

American and Bucknell hope Wednesday's Patriot League quarterfinals end up exactly the same way that they have in recent seasons. The Bison hold an eight-game winning streak in Patriot League quarterfinal games, with the Eagles carrying a perfect 7-0 mark in quarterfinal action since entering the Patriot League in 2002. Army has a more modest two-game winning streak in quarterfinal games.

Mids, Leopards Want to Go The Other Way

Navy and Lafayette are each trying to end losing streaks in Patriot League quarterfinal contests. The Mids have dropped their last seven quarterfinal contests, with the last victory coming in 2001, while the Leopards have lost five straight quarterfinal games. Lehigh is trying to end its two-game quarterfinal losing streak.

Familiar Tournament Foes

Two of the quarterfinal matchups feature teams that are getting used to seeing their opponent in the Patriot League Tournament. Bucknell and Holy Cross will meet in the Patriot League Tournament for a record 12th time, with the Bison holding a 6-5 advantage in the matchups. The teams are facing off in the postseason for the seventh time in the last eight years, and first since finishing their three consecutive Championship game matchups from 2005-07. Lehigh and Army are only squaring off for the third time in Patriot League history, but the active players are getting used to the matchup as they face off for the third straight season. Army won two barnburners at Lehigh, 47-46 and 64-61 in overtime, in the last two years.

You Again?

While two quarterfinal games feature common Tournament opponents, the other two match up teams that just played four days ago. Lafayette and American go to Bender Arena after closing the season in Easton, with American earning the 75-68 overtime win on Saturday. Colgate and Navy are right back in Annapolis after playing there on Saturday, with the Mids winning that contest, 77-64.

American Continues to Roll

American has established itself as one of the nation's top road teams this year, and now it can also add the title of one of the hottest teams in the country. The Eagles have won 10 consecutive contests, tied for the third-longest streak nationally. American has a 11-6 road record, and is one of only three teams in the country with at least 11 road wins. American's 13-1 Patriot League mark is its best record in any conference since going 11-0 in the East Coast Conference in the 1980-81 season. With their recent hot stretch, the Eagles have moved up to the No. 17 position in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major top 25.

Mercer, who was named Patriot League Player of the Year on Monday, is the first player in League history with 1,200 career points and 500 career assists. He is up to third in League history in assists. Kina joins Lafayette's Brian Ehlers (1996-00) as the only players in Patriot League history with 1,500 points, 400 rebounds, 300 assists and 150 steals in a career. Kina is one of 18 players in League history with at least 1,500 points in his career. Kina and Mercer are two of the four active 1,000-point, 300-assist players in League annals. Lafayette's and Lehigh's Marquis Hall are the others in a group that includes just 14 players in League history.

Mercer Pulls Off A Rare Double

When he was named Patriot League Player of the Year on Monday, American senior guard Derrick Mercer became just the fifth student-athlete in League history to earn both Rookie and Player of the Year recognition. Mercer joins a group that includes Holy Cross' Rob Feaster (1991-92 Rookie, 1994-95 Player), Colgate's Adonal Foyle (1994-95 Rookie, 1995-96 and 96-97 Player), Lafayette Stefan Ciosici (1995-96 Rookie and 1997-98 Player) and Holy Cross' Tim Szatko, who was the last to pull off the feat when he was named Rookie of the Year in 1999-00 and Player of the Year in 2000-01.
