Patriot League Men's Basketball Quarterfinal Preview - 3.2.10 ![]()
The quarterfinal matchups are all played at campus sites on Wednesday evening. In one side of the bracket, No. 8 Army goes to No. 1 Lehigh at 7 p.m. and No. 5 Navy is at No. 4 American at 7:30 p.m. On the other half, No. 7 Holy Cross is at No. 2 Bucknell on the CBS College Sports Network and No. 6 Colgate is at No. 3 Lafayette, with both games tipping off at 7 p.m. The winners in each bracket meet on Sunday in the semifinals at the site of the higher seed, and the League Championship is at the highest remaining seed on March 12 at 4:45 p.m. on ESPN2.
As the top seed in the field, Lehigh is guaranteed a postseason berth, automatically qualifying for the NIT if it does not win the Patriot League Championship. The Mountain Hawks are playing Army in the quarterfinal round for the fourth year in a row, with the Black Knights winning in each of the past three seasons. Lehigh did sweep the season series, beating the Black Knights by double digits twice.
Bucknell will host a Patriot League Tournament game for the first time since 2007. The Bison and Holy Cross have now matched up in 13 of the 20 Patriot League Tournaments, with the teams splitting the 12 matchups so far. It is the eighth time in the last nine years that the teams have played in the Tournament, and second straight season in the quarterfinals after Holy Cross won, 75-56, last year. The teams split the season series, each winning on their home court.
Lafayette and Colgate also renew a common Patriot League Tournament matchup, meeting for the ninth time after splitting the previous encounters. Colgate won the most recent Tournament matchup at home, 76-74, when the seeds were reversed in 2008. It is the fifth time they have faced off in the quarterfinal round in the past nine years. The teams split the season series, each winning on the other's court. Lafayette is hosting a Patriot League Tournament game for the first time since 2000.
American has finished as a top four seed and at least .500 in League play in all nine of its Patriot League seasons. The Eagles host in the quarterfinal round for the fourth year in a row, and have a perfect record in eight quarterfinal matchups. They won quarterfinals over the Mids in 2003 and 2005. Navy has dropped its quarterfinal for eight consecutive seasons. American swept the season series from Navy.

Four Trying To Extend Quarterfinal Streaks......
Wednesday's quarterfinal matchups pit the winners from last year's round against the losers, and American, Army, Colgate and Holy Cross will all be looking to advance for at least the second year in a row. The Eagles hold the longest quarterfinal winning streak, as they have a perfect 8-0 record in the round since entering the Patriot League in 2002. Army has won a quarterfinal game for three straight seasons, while Colgate has claimed two in row and Holy Cross won last season.
Against Four Trying to Snap First-Round Losing Skids
On the other side of the ledger, Navy, Lafayette, Lehigh and Bucknell will each try to win in the quarterfinal round after falling last year. And for the former three teams, it's a lot more than last year. Navy has lost its quarterfinal game for eight straight seasons, last winning in 2001. Lafayette has lost six straight quarterfinal games while Lehigh has dropped three in a row, all to Army. Bucknell fell in the quarterfinal round last year after winning in eight straight seasons.
It's Good To Be No. 1
In addition to home court throughout the Patriot League Tournament, Lehigh has history on its side as the No. 1 seed. The top seed has made the championship game in all 19 Patriot League Tournaments, winning it all 15 times. The No. 1 seed has won the championship in the last four and six of the past seven seasons, which includes Lehigh's title in 2004.
More Quarterfinal Seeding History
While no other seed has a perfect mark in the quarterfinal round, the top seeds have won the majority of the contests. The No. 2 and No. 4 seeds have won 14 of their 19 games, while the No. 3 has a 13-6 mark in quarterfinal action against the No. 6.
Fourth Year For Home-Site Format
It's the fourth season in a row where every quarterfinal game is played at the site of the higher seed, but that hasn't automatically meant success for the home team. Home squads are 8-4 in the past three seasons, with the No. 6 seed winning twice over the No. 3 and the No. 5 and No. 7 squads also winning once.
You Again!
Three of the four quarterfinal games feature a matchup that is going to be very a familiar postseason sight. Army faces Lehigh in the quarterfinal round for the fourth year in a row, with the Black Knights winning in each of the past three seasons. Holy Cross and Bucknell square off for the second straight quarterfinal round, and are playing in the League Tournament for the 13th time overall and eighth in the last nine seasons. Lafayette and Colgate meet in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in the last nine seasons, and the ninth time overall in the Tournament. American and Navy played in the quarterfinals in 2003 and 2005, with the Eagles winning.
Three-Peat?
Two-time defending champion American has a chance to become just the second three-time champion in Patriot League history. Holy Cross won the League crown in three straight seasons from 2001-2003.
Patriot League Coaches' Teleconference Quotes Available
All eight Patriot League head coaches participated in a media teleconference on Monday morning, where All-League and major award winners were also announced. To hear all the coaches' comments, listen to clips at Patriot League All-Access and Facebook pages.
McCollum Makes Patriot League History on Monday
Lehigh's C.J. McCollum capped off the most decorated freshman season in Patriot League history with multiple historical accomplishments on Monday. When the awards and All-League teams were announced in the morning, McCollum became the first-ever student-athlete to win the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. He was also named First-Team All-League, joining Colgate's Adonal Foyle (1994-95) as the only two players to achieve that feat. McCollum earlier broke Foyle's Patriot League freshman scoring record of 509 points, and his current total of 544 is just two shy of the Lehigh mark set by Darren Queenan in 1984-85. McCollum was later named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the ninth time, tying the League record set by teammate Marquis Hall (2006-07) and Bucknell's Kevin Bettencourt (2002-03).
More Awards, All-League Notes
While McCollum's accomplishments made the headlines, there were plenty of other significant bits of news in the release of the All-Patriot League teams and awards. Lafayette's Fran O'Hanlon was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the third time overall and first since 1999, while Bucknell's Bryan Cohen received the school's third Defensive Player of the Year award in six years. Navy's Chris Harris and Lehigh's Marquis Hall became the 13th and 14th Patriot Leaguers to earn All-League honors three times, while Bucknell's Mike Muscala made the Second Team to add his name alongside McCollum, Foyle and Colgate's Pat Campolieta (1998-99) as freshmen All-League picks. For the complete major awards and All-League teams, visit www.patriotleague.org.
Best Seasons in a While in the Lehigh Valley
At 19-10 and 10-4 in the Patriot League, Lehigh has matched its most overall wins since claiming 20 victories in its League Championship season in 2004, and had its best League mark since going 11-3 in 2006. The Mountain Hawks have matched their overall win total from that 2006 season. Lafayette has its most overall and Patriot League wins since 2004 when the Leopards were 18-10 overall and 9-5 in the League.
Turning their Season Around
After losing a tough game at Lafayette on Jan. 20, Bucknell fell to 1-3 in the Patriot League and just 6-14 for the season. As grim as the outlook may have looked at the time, the Bison quickly recovered with eight wins in the past 10 games and five of the last six overall. Bucknell has held at least a 19-point lead in each of its past five wins. The Bison went above .500 in the League for the first time since going 13-1 in 2007.
High-Scoring Action in League Play
Patriot League action included one 100-point outing, eight 90+ point games and 24 80+ point games this season. That dwarfs last year's totals of one 90-point game and four 80-point efforts. Patriot League players scored 29 points or more 15 times in League action after nobody did it last year, and there were 11 30-point efforts in League games. There have been 15 30-point efforts for the season, including five by Navy's Chris Harris, after a total of four last year. Harris also scored 40 points on Feb. 10 against Lehigh.
Home Court Very Important for Quarterfinal Hosts
Home teams went 38-18 in League action, and the home court has been especially important for the teams that will be hosting in Wednesday's quarterfinals. The top five teams in the standings went a combined 27-8 at home in Patriot League games. Lehigh and Bucknell finished their home slates with a 6-1 mark, while Lafayette, American and Navy each went 5-2 in home Patriot League games.
American Keeps Quarterfinal Hosting Streak Alive
American will host a game in the quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row, the longest active streak among all Patriot League teams. In fact, it's the only streak as Lehigh, Bucknell and Lafayette were on the road last year. American is a perfect 7-0 in home Tournament games in the past three seasons, winning the title the last two years. Bucknell has won its last seven home Tournament games as well, including the championship in 2006, and has not lost in the postseason in Lewisburg since 1993. Lehigh dropped quarterfinal home games in 2007 and 2008 to Army, while Lafayette is hosting a League Tournament game for the first time since 2000.
