EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette enters the Patriot League Tournament as a No. 6 seed after a 95-92 double overtime loss to American. The Leopards travel to No. 4 seed Holy Cross on Wednesday. The teams split the season series with each team winning on its home court.
If Lafayette were to beat Holy Cross on Wednesday, the Leopards would play either No. 2 seed American in Washington D.C. or No. 7 Colgate at home on Sunday at either 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
Senior forward Jared Mintz (Toronto, Canada/Vaughn Road Academy) has been selected to the All-Patriot League First Team while junior forward Ryan Willen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame) has been included in the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team.
Lafayette turned it over a season-low six times against American, a number made even more impressive by the extra 10 minutes in the two overtime sessions. Against Army, Lafayette had nine turnovers, the third-best mark of the season. Lafayette is averaging 13.6 turnovers per game and 12.2 in league games.
If it feels like the start of the third round of Patriot League play when the Leopards travel to Holy Cross on Wednesday, it should. Lafayette started Patriot League play on Jan. 8 with a 70-65 loss at Holy Cross and began the second time through Feb. 5 with a 76-70 win. A month later the teams will meet for a third time, this time in the postseason. No. 3 seed Holy Cross comes in with a 8-20 overall mark after finishing 7-7 in conference play, a game ahead of the Leopards.
Holy Cross' leading scorer is junior guard Devin Brown (15.6 ppg, 2.1 rpg) who is a solid free throw shooter (103-of-127 for 80%). Brown is joined by junior transfer (St. John's) Mike Cavataio who is averaging 8.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Senior guard Andrew Beinert, who had 21 points in the first meeting and three in the second, leads the team with 4.0 apg and has started every game. Senior F Andrew Keister (12.7 ppg) is the Patriot League's top rebounder and was an all-league second-team honoree. He joins sophomore Eric Obeysekere (4.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and freshman Dave Dudzinski (4.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg) in the frontcourt.
