Navy (8-20, 2-10) closes out its Patriot League road campaign on Wednesday night at Lehigh (18-8, 8-4), beginning at 7:00 PM at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. Navy enters the contest with an 8-20 overall record and a 2-10 Patriot League mark after Sunday's 59-46 loss to Colgate. The Midshipmen led, 27-22, at the break, but a 20-2 run to start the second half did in the Midshipmen.
The Midshipmen rank 42nd in the country in scoring defense (60.6 ppg) and 30th in turnovers per game (11.3), but is shooting just 39.5 percent from the field to rank 324th nationally while ranking 337th in the country in scoring offense (56.4 ppg).
Sophomore Worth Smith paces the Mids in scoring (10.5 ppg), rebounds (5.8 rpg), blocks (34) and steals (32). He needs nne points for 500 in his career and can became the second player in school history to record 500 points, 300 rebounds and 50 blocked shots by the end of his sophomore season.
Freshman Tilman Dunbar averages 5.1 assists per game to rank third nationally among freshmen. He has moved into the Navy freshman top 10 scoring list and needs 19 points and six assists to become the first Navy player since 1991 (Erik Harris) with 300 points and 150 assists.
Sophomore Brandon Venturini (8.9 ppg) has moved into Navy's single-season top 10 three-pointers made list with 62.
Lehigh enters the game with an 18-8 record and is tied for second in the league standings with an 8-4 record. The Mountain Hawks have lost three games in a row by a combined 18 points to Colgate, Bucknell and Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks started the Patriot League season 4-0, but is just 4-4 in their last eight league games.
Lehigh boasts a lineup featuring two seniors and three juniors that have combined to score 3,756 career points (not including C.J. McCollum's 2,361 points). Gabe Knutson currently leads Lehigh (13.7 ppg) in scoring (13.7 ppg), while Holden Greiner and Mackey McKnight each contribute over 12.0 ppg. By contrast, Navy's starting five has scored 1,417 combined points.
Navy head coach Ed DeChellis (Penn State, 1982) is in his second year at Navy, owning a 11-46 record in Annapolis. He has undertaken massive rebuilding projects at East Tennessee State, Penn State and now Navy, owning a 230-277 career record in his 17th season as a collegiate head coach.
Brett Reed (Eckerd, 1995) is in his sixth year at Lehigh, posting a 111-71 record at the school. Reed has guided the Mountain Hawks to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (2010, 2012).
What To Watch For
1) Lehigh averages 73.3 PPG; Navy allows 60.6 PPG.
2) Navy is 17-7 all-time at Stabler Arena against Lehigh.
3) The teams are the top two teams in the PL in turnover margin.
4) Both teams are at least minus-3.0 in rebounding margin.
5) Lehigh's bench outscored Navy's, 32-16, in the first meeting.
