Patriot League Men's Basketball Release - 2.22.10
Feb. 22, 2010 Center Valley, Pa. - Bucknell and Lehigh have already locked up a home game in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament, but each school will be looking for a lot more than that when they meet on Wednesday in Bethlehem. Each squad sits at 8-4 in the Patriot League, one game ahead of third-place Lafayette and Navy. The Patriot League/Anaconda weekly honors went to Holy Cross' Andrew Keister and Lehigh's C.J. Bucknell (13-15, 8-4) at Lehigh (17-10, 8-4) Series Bucknell, 92-59 TV Service Electric 2 Sports First place in the Patriot League is on the line when Bucknell visits Lehigh on Wednesday evening...The Bison can claim the top seed in the League Tournament with a win and losses by Navy and Lafayette, while Lehigh will be in great position for the top spot in the same scenario...The winner clinches at least a share of the Patriot League regular-season crown, which the Bison have not done since 2007 and the Mountain Hawks last did in 2004...The home team has won the last four meetings in the series, including Bucknell's 81-76 triumph in overtime in Lewisburg on Jan. 27...The Bison scored the last 10 points of regulation in just over three minutes to force the extra session...Lehigh won the last meeting in Bethlehem, 61-59, on Jan. 28, 2009 as the teams split last year's season series...Lehigh is trying to build on its best overall and Patriot League season since going 19-12 and 11-3 in the League in 2006, while the Bison already have their most overall and League wins since 2007. Bucknell The Bison moved into a first-place tie with Lehigh by defeating Colgate, 69-49, at Sojka Pavilion on Sunday...It was Bucknell's fourth straight win and seventh in the past eight games to improve to 13-15 overall and 8-4 in the Patriot League...The Bison earned a home game in at least the Patriot League quarterfinals...They finished the regular season with a 6-1 record in home League contests, winning the last six games after dropping the opener to Navy...Bucknell has held at least a 19-point lead in all of its four consecutive victories, three of which have come by double digits...The Bison are guaranteed of finishing over .500 in League play for the first time since 2007...The Bison swept the season series with the Raiders for the fifth time in the past six years....Bucknell took the lead for good with a 6-0 run for a 19-11 advantage with 10:16 to play until halftime...After Colgate opened the second half with a three-pointer, the Bison tallied six straight points and led by double digits for the rest of the game...Bucknell took a 20-point lead with just under five minutes to play, and went up by as many as 23 before earning the 69-49 win....Senior Patrick Behan played an outstanding game off the bench in his regular-season home finale, making 11-of-14 shots for 24 points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes of action...Freshmen Mike Muscala and Bryson Johnson each scored 12 points, while Joe Willman had nine...The Patriot League leader in blocked shots, Muscala tied the school record with two blocks on Sunday to give him 58 for the season...He has multiple blocks in five straight and 10 of 11 games...Darryl Shazier had six of the team's 15 assists, and the Bison again took great care of the ball with 10 turnovers....Bucknell shot 53 percent while holding Colgate to under 35 percent shooting...The Bison conclude their regular-season schedule at Army on Saturday at 4 p.m. Lehigh The Mountain Hawks lost their grip on sole possession of first place in the Patriot League with a 90-75 loss at rival Lafayette on Sunday...Lehigh fell to 17-10 overall and 8-4 in the League, tied for first place with Bucknell...Lehigh did clinch a home game and top four seed in the Patriot League Tournament with American's loss at Holy Cross...The teams split the season series for the fourth year in a row, with the Mountain Hawks dropping the second meeting each time...Lehigh lost the high-scoring affair despite an outstanding game by freshman C.J. McCollum, who led the team with 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists...Lehigh had an early 10-2 lead but could not keep up with Lafayette's outstanding shooting of nearly 60 percent overall and 16-of-29 from three-point range...The Mountain Hawks trailed by six points at halftime and could not recover after Lafayette tallied 14 consecutive points early in the second half...Marquis Hall had 14 points, while Zahir Carrington scored 12 and Gabe Knutson tallied 10...However, Lehigh only had 11 points outside of its top four...The Mountain Hawks shot 47 percent overall but made just 6-of-20 three- pointers...Lehigh had its two-game win streak snapped...The Mountain Hawks finish at 4-3 on the road in Patriot League action....Lehigh plays its regular-season home finale on Saturday evening against Holy Cross. Lafayette (16-11, 7-5) at Army (14-12, 4-8) Series Lafayette, 35-22 Lafayette can lock up a home game in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2000 if it can win at Army on Wednesday evening...The Leopards can also clinch a quarterfinal home contest if Navy defeats American...Lafayette's last home Patriot League Tournament game was an 87-61 win over Navy in the 2000 Championship...The Leopards are going for the season sweep over Army after defeating the Black Knights, 77-68, at home on Jan. 27...Army had won the last three meetings before that contest, and Lafayette has not won at West Point since 2006...That was also the last time the Leopards swept the season series between the schools...Lafayette is trying to build on its best season since going 18-10 overall and 9-5 in the League in 2004. Lafayette The Leopards earned a key win in their effort to host a Patriot League Tournament game for the first time since 2000, closing their regular-season home schedule with an impressive 90-75 triumph over rival Lehigh on Sunday...Lafayette improved to 16-11 overall and 7-5 in the Patriot League, just one game behind co-leaders Bucknell and Lehigh...Lafayette guaranteed at least a .500 finish in the Patriot League and a winning overall record for the first time since going 18-10 overall and 9-5 in the League in 2004...The Leopards split the season series with the Mountain Hawks for the fourth straight year, winning the rematch in each of the seasons...Lafayette scored 90 points or more for the fourth time this year, and third time in League action...After trailing 10-2 in the early minutes, Lafayette took the game over with hot shooting and multiple big scoring runs...The Leopards made just under 60 percent of their shots overall and 16-of-29 from three-point range...They answered the early deficit with a 12-0 run to take the lead for good just over four minutes into the contest...Lafayette took a six-point lead at halftime, then broke the game wide open with 14 consecutive points for a 67-50 lead with 15:12 to play...Jeff Kari hit three straight three-pointers to conclude the scoring stretch...Lafayette led by double digits the rest of the way...Four Lafayette players scored in double figures, led by 22 on 9-of-11 shooting from Ryan Willen...Kari scored 18 on 6-of-7 three-point shooting, while Jim Mower had 16 and Michael Gruner notched 12...The Leopards made 32-of-54 shots overall...Top scorer Jared Mintz, who missed Wednesday's loss at Bucknell, came off the bench and scored nine points in 25 minutees of action...Lafayette held Lehigh to 6-for-20 shooting from beyond the arc. The Leopards finish 5-2 at home in Patriot League action, and 11-3 overall at Kirby Sports Center...Lafayette plays its final game of the regular season at American on the CBS College Sports Network on Saturday at 4 p.m. Army The Black Knights won the Star Game over Navy for the first time since 2002, going up 15-2 just over eight minutes into the contest and cruising to a 69-50 win over the Mids at West Point on Saturday...Army improved to 14-12 overall and 4-8 in the Patriot League...The Black Knights also moved to 10-2 at Christl Arena this season...Army split the season series with Navy for the seventh year in a row...The Black Knights reeled off 15 consecutive points to open up the 13-point lead just over eight minutes in...Army closed the first half with six straight points to build its biggest lead of the period at 36-20 at the break...Army led by at least 14 points throughout the second half, building a lead as high as 21 points before taking the 69-50 victory...Army held Navy to just under 40 percent shooting overall as well as a 1-for-19 effort from three-point range...Army limited top Navy scorer Chris Harris to four points on 2-for-17 shooting, Harris' first game below double digits this season...Army forced 21 Navy turnovers and only allowed the Mids to dish out eight assists...The Black Knights were efficient on offense as well, making over 50 percent of their shots (26-of-51) for the contest...Cleveland Richard led the way with 15 points, while Chris Walker scored 14 off the bench....Army had lost three in a row and six of seven games...It was Army's first double-digit win over Navy since 2005...The Black Knights complete their regular-season schedule at home against Bucknell on Saturday. American (8-19, 5-7) at Navy (13-14, 7-5) Series Navy, 36-34 Navy tries to earn a home game in the Patriot League quarterfinals for the third straight year by beating American, while the Eagles can keep their chances alive for the same accomplishment with a win...The Mids are also attempting to snap a three-game losing skid against the Eagles, which was extended with American's 69-59 win at home on Jan. 27...Navy's last win over American was an 83-68 triumph at Alumni Hall on Feb. 27, 2008...A victory would also give Navy an above .500 mark in the Patriot League for the third year in a row...American needs a win to avoid its first-ever below .500 Patriot League record. American The Eagles took a hit to their chances to host a game in the Patriot League quarterfinals by losing at Holy Cross, 64-51, on Sunday afternoon...American fell to 8-19 overall and 5-7 in the Patriot League, tied for fifth place with the Crusaders and two games behind third-place Lafayette and Navy...The teams split the season series for the third year in a row...American fell behind early, as Holy Cross opened with a 12-3 lead and later used an 11-2 run to build a 35-24 lead at halftime...The Eagles cut it to 41-36 with 11:52 to play, but Holy Cross later scored seven straight points for a 56-41 lead and was up by double digits for the rest of the game...American was led by 16 points and seven rebounds from Stephen Lumpkins, while Nick Hendra tallied 10 points off the bench...Top scorer Vlad Moldoveanu was limited to seven points on 2-of-9 shooting, and the Eagles hit under 40 percent of their shots overall and 4-of-22 from three-point range...American ends its regular season at home against Lafayette on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the CBS College Sports Network. Navy The Mids had a tough start and could not recover in a 69-50 loss at rival Army in the Star Game on Saturday...Navy dropped to 13-14 on the year and 7-5 in the Patriot League, good for a third-place tie with Lafayette and one game behind both Bucknell and Lehigh...The Mids split the season series with Army for the seventh straight year, and lost the Star Game for the first time since 2002...Navy fell behind, 15-2, eight minutes into the game and never got closer than nine points the rest of the way...Navy trailed by double digits throughout the second half...Navy was just 1-of-19 from three-point range, and top scorer Chris Harris went 2-for-17 overall and scored just four points...It was Harris' first game under double digits this season...Jordan Sugars and O.J. Avworo led Navy with 13 points apiece, while T.J. Topercer scored eight points...No other Mid had more than four points...Navy ends its regular season at Colgate on Saturday, and victories in the final two games would guarantee the Mids no lower than the No. 3 seed in the League Tournament. Colgate (8-18, 4-8) at Holy Cross (8-19, 5-7) Series Holy Cross, 50-17 Holy Cross tries to keep its faint hope of hosting a Patriot League quarterfinal game alive when it welcomes Colgate on Wednesday in the home finale at the Hart Center...The Crusaders need a win and an American win over Navy to keep their chance at a top four seed intact entering the weekend...Colgate won the first meeting between the teams, 69-68, in Hamilton on Jan. 27 as Yaw Gyawu hit the game-winning shot with three seconds to play...The Raiders are trying to sweep the season series for the second time in the past three years...Holy Cross won all three meetings last year, including twice at the Hart Center...The Crusaders have won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the schools. Colgate The Raiders dropped to 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the Patriot League with a 69-49 loss at Bucknell on Sunday afternoon...It was Colgate's second straight loss and eliminates them from contention to host a quarterfinal game in the Patriot League Tournament...Colgate was swept in the season series by Bucknell for the fifth time in the past six seasons...Colgate led in the opening minutes but fell behind for good soon after...Bucknell opened up an eight-point lead less than 10 minutes into the game, and went up 32-21 at halftime...The Bison continued to add to the lead in the second half to earn the 20-point win...Freshman Mitch Rolls led the way with nine points, six rebounds and three assists...The Raiders made only 18-of-52 shots overall and 4-of-15 from three-point range...Leading scorer Kyle Roemer had only five points on 1-of-12 shooting....The Raiders finish the regular season at home against Navy on Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross The Crusaders kept their chances to host a game in the Patriot League quarterfinals alive with a 64-51 win at home over American on Sunday...Holy Cross improved to 8-19 overall and 5-7 in the Patriot League, pulling into a fifth-place tie by dropping the Eagles to the same marks...The Crusaders are two games behind third-place Lafayette and Navy...The teams split the season series for the third year in a row...Holy Cross has split the season series with each of the five teams its has faced twice...The Crusaders' five League wins are all by 13 points or more...Playing without top scorer R.J. Evans, Holy Cross started the game with a 12-3 run, and put together an 11-2 surge after American had closed to a four-point game...The Crusaders scored eight straight points for a decisive 56-41 advantage late in the second half, and were up by double digits for the rest of the game...Andrew Keister posted his second-straight double-double with 15 points and a career-high tying 18 rebounds, just one off the Hart Center record...Devin Brown had 16 points, while freshman Dee Goens scored 10 off the bench...The Crusaders held American to under 40 percent shooting and just 4-of-22 from three-point range, and turned it over only six times to the Eagles' 14...Holy Cross ends its regular season at Lehigh on Saturday evening.
