Center Valley, Pa. - Army and Colgate were tied at halftime on Sunday at West Point, but the Black Knights outscored the Raiders, 34-20, in the second half to score a 63-49 victory in a Patriot League men's basketball game televised by CBS College Sports Network.
With the win, Army improves to 13-9 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League. Colgate falls to 6-16 on the season and 2-6 in League action. Army moves into a tie for sixth place in the League standings with Holy Cross, while Colgate falls into last place in the League. Heading into Wednesday's games, Lehigh is in sole possession of first place in the Patriot League at 6-2, Lafayette and Navy are tied for second at 5-3, Bucknell and American are next at 4-4 and in front of Army, Holy Cross and Colgate.
The teams went to halftime tied at 29, but Army opened the second half on a 13-3 run over six-plus minutes to take the lead for good. It was a double-digt advantage for the last 12 minutes of the game as Army limited Colgate to 32 percent shooting overall and 1-of-9 from three-point range in the second half.
Cleveland Richard scored 17 points to lead the way for Army, while Julian Simmons scored 14. Army distributed its scoring well with four other players scoring six points. The Black Knights held a 41-27 advantage on the boards, with Eric Zastoupil leading the way with seven. Army forced 14 Colgate turnovers and held the Raiders to under 40 percent shooting for the game and 6-for-19 from three-point range. The Black Knights snapped their three-game losing skid, and also ended Colgate's three-game win streak in the series. The teams split this year's contests with home court victories.
Kyle Roemer led Colgate with 17 points, while Yaw Gyawu scored 13 and Ben Jonson added 10. In addition to their struggles from the field, Colgate made only 7-of-15 free throws. The Raiders have dropped six of their past seven games.
