Patriot League/Anaconda Player of the Week (Jan. 25-31)

Vlad Moldoveanu, American Jr., F, 6'9, 215, Bucharest, Romania/St. John's College
Moldoveanu receives his second straight Patriot League/Anaconda Player of the Week award, and now leads all players with three honors this season, after leading the streaking Eagles to a pair of wins last week. He scored 37 points, the most in League play in exactly two seasons, to lead the Eagles past Navy, 69-59, on Wednesday. Moldoveanu made 10-of-17 shots and 14-of-15 free throws in the game, and also pulled down nine rebounds. It was the highest-scoring output in a Patriot League game since Greg Sprink totaled 37 for Navy in the same matchup on Jan. 30, 2008, and the most points for an American player since Andre Ingram scored 37 in a 93-87 overtime loss at Lafayette on February 19, 2005. Moldoveanu again led all scorers with 21 points while shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 at the line in a 76-66 win at first-place Lafayette on Saturday. He averaged 29.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games while making 58.6% (17-of-29) from the field and 90.5% (19-of-21) from the line. He also hit 5-of-12 three-pointers. Moldoveanu is second in Patriot League play with 22.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest, and is making more than 50 percent of his shots in League action.

Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week (Jan. 25-31)

Gabe Knutson, Lehigh Fr., F, 6'9, 210, Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee
Knutson gives Lehigh the Patriot League/Anaconda Rookie of the Week award for the fifth consecutive time, and earns his second honor of the season, after averaging 22.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in two games last week. Knutson did most of the damage in a nationally-televised contest on CBS College Sports Network on Sunday at Holy Cross, scoring a career-high 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field and 9-of-11 from the foul line in the 78-60 victory. He also pulled down five rebounds in the game. Knutson began the week by scoring 13 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 at the line in an 81-76 overtime loss to Bucknell on Wednesday. Knutson shot 68% (15-of-22) from the field and 88% (14-of-16) from the line to accumulate his 22.0 average. He is averaging 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for the season, with the rebounding mark placing fifth in the Patriot League. Knutson joined classmate C.J. McCollum as the first-ever pair of freshman teammates to post games of 30 points or more in school history. McCollum won the last three Rookie of the Week honors, and the duo has combined for seven Rookie of the Week awards this season.

Honorable Mention Performances Last Week (Jan. 25-31)

Jordan Sugars, Navy So., G, 6'3, 210, Winchester, Va./Millbrook
Sugars scored a career-high 34 points on 13-of-17 shooting and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in a 100-91 win over Colgate on Saturday. He had 11 points and eight boards in a loss to American on Wednesday.

Kyle Roemer, Colgate Sr., G, 6'3, 214, Martinez, Calif./De La Salle

Patriot League Notebook

We're Halfway There
The race for the 2010 Patriot League regular-season title, and all important seeding in the League Tournament, has hit the midway point with five teams separated by just one game at the top of the standings. Lehigh and Lafayette are tied for first at 5-2 in League action, with the Mountain Hawks pulling into the tie by beating Holy Cross, 78-60, on Sunday after Lafayette fell at home against American, 76-66, on Saturday. American improved to 4-3 with the win over Lafayette, and remains in a tie for third place with Bucknell and Navy after each of those teams won on Saturday as well. The Bison defeated Army, 55-48, while the Mids beat Colgate, 100-91. Colgate, Army and Holy Cross are all at 2-5 in League action.

Sweeps or Splits
Home teams held serve throughout the first half of League play, so most teams looking for sweeps of a season series will do so on the road. That's true of three of the four Patriot League games coming up this weekend. The first-place co-leaders go on the road looking for season sweeps of their opponents on Saturday, as Lehigh visits American and Lafayette goes to Holy Cross. Colgate goes for a sweep over Army when the two meet at West Point on Sunday at Noon in a CBS College Sports Network telecast. Navy is the one team with the chance for a sweep at home as the Mids take on Bucknell on Friday, a game moved up a night due to the weather forecast.

Hitting the Century Mark
Scoring has been up in Patriot League play all season, and that was no more evident than Navy's 100-91 win over Colgate on Saturday. It was the highest-scoring Patriot League game since Lafayette won at Navy, 103-99, in overtime on Jan. 19, 2008. The Mids became the first Patriot League team to score 100 points in any game since they did it in triple overtime at William & Mary last year, while Navy topped the century mark in a Patriot League game for the first time since 2000. There have now been five 90+ point outings in League play after just one was recorded last year, and 10 80+ point games after four were tallied all of the 2008-09 League season.

Three More Over 30
In addition to the team scoring success, individual stars continue to light up the scoreboard in Patriot League play, too. Three players scored 30 points over the weekend, with Navy's Jordan Sugars outdueling Colgate's Kyle Roemer, 34-31, in their shootout and Lehigh's Gabe Knutson also tallying 31. Patriot League players have scored 29 points or more 10 times in League action after nobody did it last year, and there have been seven 30-point efforts in League games. Eleven 30-point efforts have been put up for the season, including three by Roemer and Navy's Chris Harris, after just four were recorded all of last year.

Lafayette Hoping to Avoid a Repeat
Lafayette has started the first half of Patriot League play in the exact same fashion it did in 2008. The Leopards are at 5-2 against the exact same schedule, posting the same wins and losses in each of the games. Lafayette hopes the similiarity ends there, as the Leopards slumped to a 6-8 finish in the League in 2008 and lost in the quarterfinal round after the hot start.

Home-Court Advantage
The host schools held their own during the first half of the Patriot League schedule, as the home team has a 20-8 mark as the schedule hits the back end. While the four games were split between road and home squads over the weekend, home squads have still won 13 of the past 16 Patriot League games. Lehigh and American are a perfect 3-0 at home in League play, while Lafayette, Bucknell and Navy are all 3-1 and no team has a losing mark on its home court. On the other side, only co-leaders Lafayette (2-1) and Lehigh (2-2) are at or above .500 on the road in League action. The home success is consistent with the entire season to date. Lehigh leads the way at 9-1 at home, while Army is 8-1, Lafayette is 9-2 and Navy holds a 7-3 mark. Patriot League teams are 51-28 at home this season and 26-70 away.

Lehigh's Hall Starts a New Club
Lehigh senior guard Marquis Hall became the first player in League history with more than 1,300 points and 500 assists to his name on Wednesday. Last year, American's Derrick Mercer, the Patriot League Player of the Year, became the first with 1,200 points and 500 assists. Hall is now 31st with 1,379 points, fourth with 506 assists and 19th with 159 steals in the League career record book.

Navy's Harris Company Almost as Exclusive
While Hall holds a singular spot in League history, Navy senior Chris Harris has now accomplished a feat that only one other Patriot Leaguer had ever done before. With his 150th career steal on Wednesday, Harris entered the Patriot League record book in that category. It is his fourth spot in the League record book, as Harris is already in the charts as a 1,000-point scorer (1,459) and top 10 in three-pointers made (262) and free-throw percentage (85.1). The only other Patriot Leaguer to occupy a spot in those four categories was Bucknell's Kevin Bettencourt, who starred for the Bison from 2002-06.

Colgate's Roemer Goes Over 1,500
Colgate's Kyle Roemer became just the 19th player in Patriot League history to go over 1,500 career points. Roemer passed the mark during Saturday's 31-point effort against Navy, and now occupies 18th place in League annals with 1,505 points. He became just the seventh player in Colgate history with 1,500 points, and first since Adonal Foyle with 1,500 points and 400 rebounds. Roemer is also nearing the Patriot League record book for three-pointers made.

First-Year Success
While Hall, Harris and Roemer are three well-known veterans in the Patriot League, American's Vlad Moldoveanu and Lehigh's C.J. McCollum are becoming household names with huge first seasons. A transfer from George Mason, Moldoveanu is lighting up the League in his first go-round with the Eagles. His 22.7 points and 8.3 rebounds are both second in League action. Moldoveanu's 37-point effort against Navy on Wednesday was the highest in League play in almost exactly two years. McCollum is fourth in League action with 20.4 points per game, and third for the entire season at 16.1.

Some Blowouts, Some Close Ones
The first 28 games in Patriot League action featured a near-split between single-digit and double-digit differences, with 16 decided by more than 10 points and 12 by less than 10. Bucknell has provided by far the most drama, with six of its first seven League games decided by single digits and five of those by five points or less. Of the 12 League games decided by single digits, seven were within five points or less. Lehigh has had the most contests go the other way, as all five of its victories and six of its first seven games overall were decided by more than 10 points. The only close one for the Mountain Hawks: against Bucknell, of course, in an 81-76 overtime loss on Wednesday.

Super Sophomores
Six of the top 10 and eight of the top 13 scorers in the Patriot League are sophomores. Colgate's Yaw Gyawu, Navy's Jordan Sugars, Holy Cross' R.J. Evans, Lafayette's Jim Mower, Holy Cross' Devin Brown and Army's Julian Simmons are all in the top 10 in scoring on the League leaderboard. Sugars, despite standing just 6-foot-3, is second in the League with 8.2 rebounds per game, with American's Stephen Lumpkins third in rebounds (7.9) and second in blocked shots (1.6) per contest. Sophomores hold four of the top seven spots in three-point field goals per game and three-point field goal percentage.

Coaching Milestones
American's Jeff Jones earned his 300th career win on Jan. 23 against Holy Cross, after earlier recording his 150th win at the school. He's certainly not the only Patriot League coach with a milestone number this year. Lafayette Head Coach Fran O'Hanlon surpassed the 200-victory plateau and also became the Patriot League all-time leader in games coached. Colgate's Emmett Davis won his 150th career game and Navy' Billy Lange won his 75th at the school. Bucknell's Dave Paulsen recorded his 275th win.

Success Vs. NEC, Ivy League in Non-League Play
The Patriot League finished its non-League schedule with a 49-70 record, with 30 of the wins coming against rivals from the Northeast Conference and Ivy League. The Patriot League finished 17-7 against the NEC, and put up a 13-8 mark against the Ivy League.
