Last Set of Non-League Action Begins Monday

The Patriot League men's basketball schedule tips off on Saturday, so all eight teams have just one more chance to prepare for the League slate this week. The final non-League contests before the League schedule begins start on Monday, with Navy looking to match a school record with its 11th non-League win when it visits Elon and American trying for its third straight winning non-League season at home against Columbia. Five teams step on the court on Tuesday, with just Army at home as it plays Fairfield. Holy Cross goes to Central Florida, Bucknell is at Cornell, Lafayette visits Penn and Colgate goes to North Carolina Central. Lehigh tries to extend its school records for overall and road non-League wins in a season when it visits Princeton on Wednesday. Navy, American, Holy Cross and Army are playing their final non-League games of the season, while Lehigh could also have its final contest if its postponed game with Washington is not rescheduled.

Winning Weekend for Patriot League

Five of the eight Patriot League teams earned a victory over the weekend, with three of those wins coming against Ivy League opponents. American and Lehigh each beat an Ivy League foe at home on Friday, with the Eagles knocking off Brown and the Mountain Hawks taking down Columbia. Army rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to win at Dartmouth on Saturday. Navy completed a perfect non-League home record with a win over Wofford on Friday, while Holy Cross won at Boston University. Bucknell, Colgate and Lafayette all fell in their games.

Navy, Lehigh in Search of 11th Victory

Navy and Lehigh are both looking to finish impressive non-League campaigns this week with their 11th win before the start of League action. The Mids have twice won 11 non-League contests, doing so in back-to-back years in 1998-99 and 1999-00. Lehigh has already set school records with its 10 non-League victories and five non-League road wins. The Mountain Hawks are off to their best start since 1925, and will try to extend both school records at Princeton on Wednesday.

Eagles, Mountain Hawks Among Nation's Best On Road

Only 10 Division I teams have recorded five or more road victories this season, and two of those squads reside in the Patriot League. Lehigh (5-1) and American (5-5) have each notched five victories on the road, trailing only the six of Butler for the Division I lead. The Mountain Hawks have a chance to earn their sixth road win on Wednesday at Princeton, while the Eagles are on a four-game homestand after being one of eight squads in the country to play 10 of their first 12 games on the road.

Navy Completes Perfect Non-League Home Record

For the first time in its Patriot League history, Navy will begin League action this weekend with an unblemished home record. The Mids completed a 7-0 mark in their non-League home schedule with a 75-70 victory over Wofford on Friday. It is Navy's first ever perfect non-League home mark, and the Mids have won nine consecutive non-League home games overall.

Patriot League Openers Coming on Saturday

A matchup between the top two teams in the Patriot League preseason poll and a nationally-televised rematch of one of the League's most memorable games highlight the first slate of League contests on Saturday. The schedule opens when Lehigh, picked second in the preseason and with the League's top record at 10-3 thus far, visits defending champion and preseason favorite American at 2 p.m. The afternoon slate of contests concludes with the Patriot League's 2009 debut on ESPNU, with Bucknell visiting Navy at 5 p.m. in a rematch of the triple overtime classic won by the Bison, 87-86, at Navy in last year's Patriot League quarterfinals. Lafayette is at Holy Cross and Colgate visits Army in the other afternoon matchups. All games that are not broadcast on ESPNU are available for a small monthly fee via the Patriot League All-Access package at www.patriotleague.com.

West Coast Bias

The Patriot League is firmly cemented in the Eastern part of the United States, but a group of players from well outside the region are making sure the Western influence is felt throughout the League. Four of the League's top five scorers come from the Western part of the country, with Navy's Kaleo Kina (Arizona) in first at 19.6 points per game, American's Garrison Carr (Washington) next at 18.0 per game, Lafayette's Andrew Brown (Colorado) in fourth with 15.3 points per contest and Lehigh's Marquis Hall (Oregon) fifth with 14.7 points per game.

Checking Up on the Career Lists

In addition to this season's scoring outburst, the quartet from the west is also carving out impressive numbers in the Patriot League career record book. Kina, Brown and Carr are the top three active career scorers in the Patriot League, and have all joined the League's 1,000-point club. Kina and Brown are both over 1,200 points, with Kina holding the top mark among active players with 1,262 career points. American's Derrick Mercer is the final active member with 1,000 points, and leads all active players and places ninth in League annals with 422 career assists. Hall is next among active players with 326 career assists, with Kina and Brown right behind to join Mercer as players with more than 1,000 points and 300 assists. Colgate's Alex Woodhouse is 10th with 138 career blocks, while Kina places 18th with 159 steals. Brown and Carr both have impressive standing in the three-point career leaderboard. Brown is sixth all-time with 256 three-pointers. Carr's 232 three-pointers leave him five shy of the top 10, but his 40.7 three-point percentage is fifth in League annals.

Patriot League Doing Well Against Regional Conferences

The Patriot League has already clinched a winning record in matchups against four Eastern conferences this season, and can add one more to the list this week. The Patriot League has completed a winning mark against the America East (6-5), Colonial Athletic Association (4-2) and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (4-0), and has clinched a winning record against the Northeast Conference (10-8) with one game to play later in the year. This week, the Patriot League tries to finish above .500 against the Ivy League. Patriot League teams are 8-7 against the Ivies heading into the four contests from Monday-Wednesday.
