WEST POINT, N.Y. -- For the fourth time in nine years, and the fifth time in program history, the Army baseball team is headed back to the NCAA Regionals. On Monday, the Black Knights learned that they will face Virginia at the Charlottesville Regional on Friday.
The field of 64 for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament was announced on ESPNU, and Army's pairing was announced approximately 10 minutes into the hour-long special. The Black Knights gathered as a team to celebrate the special moment.
In addition to top-seeded Virginia (38-17-1), second-seeded Oklahoma (38-22) and third-seeded Appalachian State (39-16) will join No. 4 seed Army (41-13) at the Charlottesville Regional.
The Black Knights, who have won a program-record 41 games this season, head to Charlottesville, Va., on Wednesday to prepare for its first-round matchup with the nationally-ranked Cavaliers. Virginia is currently ranked among the Top 25 in all of the major national polls. Oklahoma and Appalachian State will meet in the other first-round contest.
The four-team, double-elimination tournament begins Friday and continues through Monday (if necessary). The winner of the Charlottesville Regional will advance to face the winner of the Columbia Regional in the NCAA Super Regionals (June 8-11).
Army and Virginia have met five times previously, and the Cavaliers own a 3-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two schools have not squared off since 1913. Army and Appalachian State faced each other in 2006, with the Mountaineers taking both games (11-8 and 4-2). The Black Knights and Sooners have never met on the baseball diamond.
The 64 teams in the NCAA field will open play Friday, June 1, at 16 regional sites across the country. The winners of each of the 16 regionals advance to the best-of-three Super Regionals, taking place June 8-11. The eight Super Regional winners travel to the College World Series to be held June 15-26 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.
