WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross junior third baseman Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) has been selected second team All-New England, as announced by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association. Perry will now take part in the 2009 New England All-Star Game, which will take place on Thursday, June 4, at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.
The 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year, Perry hit .423 this season with 16 doubles, seven home runs, 42 runs scored and 37 runs batted in. He led the Patriot League in both batting average and on-base percentage (.491), in addition to standing third in the conference in slugging percentage (.626). Perry set new Holy Cross single-season records with 77 hits and 114 total bases, breaking the old marks of 66 hits and 99 total bases which were set by his father, Ronnie Perry, in 1978. He also tied school single-season marks with 16 doubles, 49 games played and 49 games started.
Over the first three years of his collegiate career, Perry owns a .343 batting average with 36 doubles, nine home runs, 81 runs scored and 64 runs batted in.
Holy Cross finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 22-27, and finished third in the Patriot League with an 11-7 mark in conference games. The Crusaders, who won 21 games in 2008, finished with at least 20 victories in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1922 and 1923.
