In a lineup that features one of the nation's most prolific power hitters and a couple of three-year starters in the outfield, Gerry Runyan might be the most important hitter in the Bucknell batting order.

You see, the junior from Milton, in his first season as a regular for the Bison, bats clean-up, and while obviously an important role, it is what Runyan does there that matters the most. Bucknell's leading hitter heading into this weekend's Patriot League semifinals against Navy, Runyan provides protection for Doug Shribman, the all-time leading home run hitter in Bucknell and Patriot League history, who hits in the spot ahead of him.

"He's a very valuable hitter in our lineup," said Bucknell coach Gene Depew, in his 30th season. "He's in the four-hole behind Shribman and we need someone to protect him. Gerry's done a great job there, otherwise no one would pitch to Doug."
