Loudonville, NY - Holy Cross freshman pitcher Drew Bigda (Stamford, CT/Westhill) shutout the Saints for eight innings, but Siena's DH Ryan Finn hit a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth as they defeated the Crusaders, 4-2, at Siena Field in Loudonville, NY.
After a score less first inning, HC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Bigda singled with one out and moved to second when junior Bill Andruskevich (Milford, MA/Milford) drew a walk. Sophomore Ed Turner (Drexel Hill, PA/St. Joseph's Prep) singled to center field to give Holy Cross the lead.
The Crusaders added an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Bigda reached on an error by third baseman and moved to second on Andruskevich's sacrifies bunt. Andruskevich was called safe at first on an error by Siena's catcher. Turner followed that with a single to load the bases with no outs. After one out junior Dan Powers (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) reached on a fielder's choice while driving in the run.
In the bottom of the ninth the Saints got back-to-back singles with one out. Powers came in relief for Bigda and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Finn followed that with a homerun for a 4-2 victory.
Bigda pitched 8.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs. He also struck out seven batters. Powers allowed two runs and took the loss.
