CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Lehigh senior Evans Kosgei was named the Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time in his career, and he also was one of seven student-athletes named to the 2011 Academic All-Patriot League Team on Tuesday. The awards were voted on by cross country sports information directors in the Patriot League.

Kosgei is joined on the Academic All-Patriot League Team by American sophomore John Pope, Army senior Michael Mitchell, Bucknell senior Dan Dillon, Colgate junior Chris Johnson and Navy seniors James Pearson and Cody Rome.

Kosgei, a native of Moiben, Keyna, has a 3.81 cumulative GPA in computer science. He also was the 2011 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. He is now a four-time member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team, having earned nods in cross country twice and indoor and outdoor track and field once each. He is a three-time Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award winner (2009, 10, 11) and he has been named to the Dean’s List every semester at Lehigh. He was named a P.C. Rossin Engineering Fellow in 2009 and he was Lehigh’s Undergraduate Merit Award winner in 2010.

Kosgei finished fourth this season at the Patriot League Cross Country Championships, and he was the runner-up in 2009 and 2010.

Dillon leads the Academic All-Patriot League Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.91 interdisciplinary studies, economics and mathematics.

Pope, who finished ninth at the Patriot League Championships, has a 3.81 GPA in international studies, and Mitchell has a 3.797 GPA in geospatial info science. Rome, an applied mathematics major, and Pearson, an English major, both have GPAs of 3.55. Pearson was third at the Championship meet, while Rome was eighth.

Chris Johnson, the Patriot League individual champion for 2011, rounds out the team with a 3.40 GPA in history.

Johnson, Pearson and Kosgei all were members of the All-Patriot League First Team with their top-seven finishes at the Patriot League Championships, while Rome and Pope were members of the second team.

The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men's Cross Country Academic All-Patriot League Team has seven student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
