Bethlehem, Pa. - The Patriot League Cross Country Championship kicked off the League's 2008-09 docket on Saturday at the Lehigh University Cross Country Course, with Army and Navy sharing the title in the men's meet and Navy capturing its second consecutive crown in the women's race.
Army and Navy each earned a share of the men's Championship with identical team scores of 47 points, knocking off six-time defending champion American. The Navy women won their second consecutive Patriot League Championship by 39 points over runner-up and 2007 co-champion Bucknell.
The men's Championship gives Army an unprecedented seventh Patriot League title, one more than Bucknell and American. This is the first men's cross country championship for Navy. Army senior Jon Anderson was named the Patriot League Outstanding Runner of the Meet in the men's race with his first-place time of 24:19.4 in the 8k race. Navy sophomore Andrew Hanko, the 2007 Rookie of the Meet, came in second place with a time of 24:37.
The top mark for a freshman in the men's race came from Navy's Jeremy Haney, who was named 2008 Patriot League Rookie of the Meet for his time of 25:28.8. Navy Men's Cross Country Head Coach Al Cantello won his first Patriot League Coach of the Year honor, voted on by his peers.
Navy junior Amy Watson earned Patriot League Outstanding Runner of the Meet honors with her first-place time of 21:23.5 in the women's 6k. The mark was a little over five seconds ahead of freshman Stephanie Fulmer of Bucknell, the Rookie of the Meet on the women's side. Navy Women's Cross Country Head Coach Karen Boyle was voted Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Army's Anderson and Navy's Hanko each earned spots on the First-Team All-Patriot League squad, which included the top seven finishers in the race. They were joined on the men's First-Team by Lehigh's Jon Wetzel and Ben Lampi, American's Carlos Jamieson, Army's Andrew Catalano and Navy's Bill Prom. The men's Second-Team All-Patriot League squad, which included the next seven finishers, was comprised of Navy's Matt Devillers and Jonathan Grant, Army's Zac Reiter and Kirk Chitwood, American's Jeff Brannigan and Nick Ryan and Lehigh's Evans Kosgei.
Joining Watson and Fulmer on the women's First-Team All-Patriot League squad were Navy's Katie Rentz, Marina McGrail and Jess Palacio, Lehigh's Shannon Alejandro and Army's Chelsea Prahl. Second-Team All-Patriot League selections on the women's side included American's Octavia Rinehardt, Navy's Lexa Gass, Maureen Dooley and Anna Bernal, Lehigh's Alexis Weiner, Bucknell's Caitlin Cavanaugh and Army's Ashley Morgan.
It was the second consecutive year and second time in Patriot League history that co-champions were awarded in the sport of cross country; last year, Navy and Bucknell were named co-champions in women's cross country after they each combined for a score of 58 points.
Next up for the Patriot League Cross Country teams will be the NCAA regional meets, which will take place Nov. 15. Teams in the Mid-Atlantic Regional will compete in Princeton, N.J., while teams in the Northeast Regional will compete in the Bronx, N.Y.
