Easton, Pa. -- Navy's Andrew Hanko and Colgate's Elise DeRoo successfully defended their individual titles at the 21st Patriot League Cross Country Championships Saturday at Lafayette.
Hanko, who finished in 24:22, also led the Midshipmen to their third straight team title with 43 points, edging out second-place finisher American (52 points). Army placed third with 86 points, and Colgate (106) and Lehigh (120) followed. Bucknell was sixth with 130 points, Holy Cross (192) was seventh and Lafayette (246) was eighth.
On the women's side, DeRoo and teammate Chelsea Burns, who finished second, helped Colgate win its first women's cross country title with 42 points. Bucknell was second with 64 points and Army was third with 93. Navy (109) finished fourth and Holy Cross (120) was fifth. American (136), Lehigh (140) and Lafayette (170) rounded out the women's race.
DeRoo posted a school-record time of 19:17 to win the individual title, and Burns set a personal record with 20:07 to lead Colgate, which had four finishers in the top 15. Army's Elizabeth O'Donnell was the top freshmen finisher on the women's side, earning the Rookie of the Meet honors.
Freshman Clay Elward, one of nine Navy runners to finished in the top 18, was named the Rookie of the Meet.
After Hanko, Lehigh's Evans Kosgei picked up his second straight second-place finish at the championships, finishing in 24:32. American's Craig Brown, Colin Eustis and Jeff Brannigan swept the next three spots, but Navy had runners finish eighth, 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th to give the Mids the title.
Hanko's time ranked third on the League meet's all-time performance list. Kosgei's now ranks ninth.
His coach, Al Cantello, in his 42nd year, was named the Patriot League Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
Colgate's Laura Nardelli, in her 12th season of coaching, was named the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. It was her first League honor.
