Lewisburg, Pa. - The American University men's team claimed its third consecutive Patriot League cross country title, while the Army women capture their first crown since 1997. The League meet was held today at the Bucknell Golf Course in Lewisburg, Pa.
On the men's side, the Eagles finished in first place for the third straight season with 19 points, blowing out their nearest competitor by 52 points. Navy placed second overall with 71 points, while Army came in third with 78 points. Rounding out the men's team standings in the 8,000-meter race were Lehigh (89), Bucknell (136), Colgate (173), Lafayette (187) and Holy Cross (233).
American senior Pat MacAdie was tabbed the Patriot League Cross Country Runner of the Meet for the second year in a row for his 25:37.00 performance. AU's Brendon Fennell, Sean Duffy and Steve Hallinan came in right behind MacAdie 2-3-4 claiming All-League first team honors. Fennell crossed the line in a time of 25:38.18, Duffy clocked in at 25:38.69 and Hallinan finished at 25:41.8.
First-team All-League honors also went Colgate's top finisher Michael Hanlon, who placed fifth (25:47.70), Army's Paul Strozier, the sixth place finisher (25:52.35) and Navy's Joshua McCann, who ran to a seventh place showing (25:59.56). Stozier, who finished 20th in 2003, picked up his second career All-League mention.
Second team all-star accolades were awarded to the eighth-14th place finishers. Those honorees include Lehigh runners Victor Vientos (eighth) and Rob Hampson (14th), as well as American's Pat Burford (ninth) and Phil Gaeta (12th). Army placed two student-athletes on the second team in Eric Heely (11th) and Jon Skelton (13th). Rounding out the All-Leaguers was Navy's Joshua Sink who placed 10th overall.
The Black Knights of Army won the women's race, claiming their first title since 1997, with 46 points. Navy came in second with 56 points, while American placed third with 65 points. Rounding out the remainder of the women's 6,000-meter race was Bucknell (89), Colgate (127), Lehigh (155), Lafayette (186) and Holy Cross (212).
Army was lead by junior Jill Hajek who crossed the line in a time of 23:12.21, claiming sixth place and All-League first team honors. American's Keira Carlstrom placed first with a 21:44.39 finish time, good enough to capture her second Patriot League Women's Runner of the Meet honor in as many years. Other Eagles garnering first team accolades were fourth place finisher Zaia Wharton (23:00.53) and Kelley Taylor, who placed seventh (23:17.92).
Other first team members were Navy's Emily Castro (22:58.30), who placed third and Christine Taranto, who had a fifth place finish (23:05.12). Rounding out the first team was the meet's second place finisher Lehigh's Jen Schappert, (22:53.62).
Second team All-League status was awarded to four Army runners, including Myra Markey (eighth), Maggie Clark (ninth), Desiree Zielen-Ersing (10th) and Andrea Edgar (13th). Navy's Kyleigh Millhouse (11th), Bucknell's Leanna Nastase (12th) and Colgate's Lia Cross (14th) completed the 2004 All-League second team.
