ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sophomore Jay Stell will compete for Team USA in the javelin at the Pan American Track and Field Junior Games in Medellin, Colombia on Friday.
Stell qualified for the national team by placing fourth in the javelin at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa in June. Stell was one of the two highest finishers at the national meet who had also met the world-qualifying standard.
Countries from North America and South America compete at the Pan American Junior Games and athletes must be between the ages of 16 and 19 to be eligible for the Junior Games.
Stell had an outstanding freshman season at Navy in 2013. Stell won the javelin title at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and was named the rookie of the meet. Stell also placed fourth at the IC4A Outdoor Championship and was 14th in the javelin at the NCAA East Regional Championship with a season-best throw of 223-1 (68.00m).
