Three Patriot League Student-Athletes Qualify for NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship

June 4, 2008

Center Valley, Pa. - Army's John Mickowski, Lafayette's Ashley Harbin and American's Carlos Jamieson earned spots in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship after their stellar performances at the NCAA East Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday and Saturday.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held June 11-14 at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mickowski won the men's 1,500-meter dash in a time of 3:50.94 to qualify for the NCAA Championship and become the first-ever Army student-athlete to claim an NCAA Regional title. Mickowski finished more than a half-second ahead of his closest competitor, Georgetown's Andrew Bumbalough (3:51.53). Mickowski is the first Army athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship since 2004. In the fall, Mickowski competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

Harbin qualifies for the NCAA Championship for the third year in a row after placing third in the hammer throw at the East Regionals. Harbin threw a distance of 202'0" on her fourth attempt of the afternoon, finishing behind only Jasmine Jennings of Rhode Island (205'6") and Kristen Callan of Virginia Tech (203'07"). Harbin is the first Patriot League student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in three seasons. She also competed in this year's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in the weight throw.

Jamieson placed fourth in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:09.56 after coming into the event as the 18th seed. He becomes the first American student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the event, and will be competing in an NCAA Championship for the first time.

The Patriot League sent 36 student-athletes to the East Regional, with seven of the League's eight schools represented. Mickowski, Harbin and Jamieson earned All-East Region honors, along with Navy's Jacqui Charnigo who finished in a tie for seventh place in the women's pole vault event with a mark of 12'6". The top-five finishers in each event earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championship.
