East Region Preliminary Round Results | NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Schedule

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Patriot League will have its largest representation at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 2007 after four student-athletes qualified for the event by finishing in the top-12 at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round over the weekend.

Three of the qualifiers were from Boston University, with Rosa Moriello (5,000-meter run) and Allison Barwise (high jump) on the women's side and Rich Peters (1,500-meter run) for the men. Navy's Jay Stell qualified in the men's javelin to complete the Patriot League's contingent.

The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held from June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Peters will begin his competition in the semifinal round on June 12, while the finals for all four Patriot League representatives will be held on June 14. The East Preliminary Round was held at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. from Thursday-Saturday, and the four Patriot League representatives advanced to the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top-12 in their event. All four in fact did much better than that as each student-athlete placed in the top six. Peters placed third in the 1,500-meter run in 3:45.39 after grabbing the last of the 24 spots to advance past the preliminary round. Stell came in fourth place in the javelin with a mark of 71.35 meters. Barwise was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.81 meters, while Moriello placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:03.57.

The four qualifiers are the most out of the Patriot League since five made it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2007, and Barwise and Moriello mark the first time since 2006 and fifth overall that multiple females qualified from the League. Boston University is the first school to send three student-athletes since Army did it in 2004, while Peters becomes the first Patriot Leaguer to qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the same season since Lafayette's Ashley Harbin in 2008 and first male to do it since Navy's Paul Harris in 2007.

A handful of Patriot Leaguers just missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Lehigh's James Miller was the next-highest finisher at 14th in the men's 5,000-meter run, with his time of 14:15.19 missing qualification by just 2.15 seconds. Bucknell's Christian Lupica finished 15th in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 13.80, just two-hundreths of a second off the qualifying mark of 13.78. Lafayette's Rachel Pena came in 17th place in the women's hammer throw, while Bucknell's George Trees had the same position in the men's javelin. Navy's Jordan Sartor-Francis rounded out the top-20 finishers with 20th place in the men's 200-meter dash.
