Women's East Preliminary Championship Qualifiers | Men's East Preliminary Championship Qualifiers
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced the participants for the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships competition on Thursday, with 29 Patriot Leaguers earning spots to compete in the East Region on May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. with an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA East Region Preliminary Championship will be held at the University of North Florida and features the top-48 qualifiers for events in both the men and women's competition. The top-12 finishers in each event will join the top-12 performers from the West Region to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Seventeen men and 12 women will represent the Patriot League in the East Region Preliminary Round, which features student-athletes from all schools east of the Mississippi River. Of that group, three enter the competition with seeds in the top 12 of their event. Boston University's Allison Barwise is seeded third in the high jump and Lafayette's Rachel Pena is seventh in the hammer on the women's side, while Navy's Jay Stell as the top seed among the men's competitors from the Patriot League at 11th in the javelin.
Barwise will be joined by four teammates from the Terriers in the women's competition, including one who will compete in a pair of events. Nikko Brady is the only Patriot Leaguer in multiple events in the preliminaries as she enters at 25th in the long jump and 43rd in the 100-meter hurdles. The Boston University women will also send Rosa Moriello (31st) in the 5,000-meter run, Gemma Acheampong (41st) in the 100-meter dash and Monica Adler (46th) in the 1,500-meter run.
Three Navy women will compete in the discus as Maressa Guynn (24th), Lauren Allam (32nd) and Teronda Brown (42nd) represent the Mids. Lehigh will send a pair of student-athletes to the women's competition with Jimil Ataman at 43rd in the hammer and Courtney Avery at 44th in the high jump to give the Patriot League multiple competitors in each event. Army's Justine Rennekamp rounds out the women's competitors and comes in 46th in the javelin.
Navy leads the Patriot League in the men's preliminaries with seven competitors, including one who will be trying to make a third-straight appearance to the NCAA Championship. Zack Duncavage finished in the top 16 and earned All-America honors in the discus in each of the last two years, and comes into the East Preliminary Round seeded 16th in the Region in the event. The rest of the Navy contingent in addition to Stell and Duncavage features Jordan Sartor-Francis (23rd) in the 200-meter dash, Stephen Schroeder (24th) in the 5,000-meter run, Jiles Maness (24th) in the pole vault, Joshua Kingsland (42nd) in the 800-meter run and Shane O'Donnell (48th) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Bucknell's Christian Lupica (110-meter hurdles) and Lehigh's Adeolu Adesida (High Jump) each come into the weekend seeded 21st in their event. Boston University's Alec Olson is 22nd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase which also features Bucknell's Tyler Erhard (41st) and O'Donnell. Bucknell's George Trees (24th) joins Stell in the javelin, while Army's Clyde Wilson (40th) competes along with Kingsland in the 800-meter run and Lehigh's James Miller (40th) runs in the 5,000-meter run along with Schroeder. Boston University also features Rich Peters (31st) in the 1,500-meter run and Reuben Horace (35th) in the hammer, while Lehigh's Ryan Mahalsky (39th) runs in the 10,000-meter.
Navy leads all Patriot League schools with 10 overall competitors in the NCAA East Preliminary Championship, while Boston University follows with eight, Lehigh totals five, Bucknell has three, Army two and Lafayette one.
