CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Army senior Thomas Wagner has been selected as the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and he is one of 10 student-athletes selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, announced Friday.

The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team is comprised of 10 student-athletes.

Wagner, who was named the Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet at the outdoor championships, won a pair of individual titles in the high jump and the triple jump, and he was the runner-up in the long jump. He will graduate from West Point as the only Black Knight to eclipse the 7-foot mark in the high jump.

The senior from Clinton, N.Y., has a 3.549 GPA in physics. He is a six-time Dean’s List honoree and he’s an inductee into the National Physics Honor Society.

Wagner is joined on the Academic All-League Team by his teammate Christopher Jones, who is a junior chemistry major with a 3.736 GPA. Wagner is a four-time member of the team, while Jones is a two-time selection.

Bucknell senior Rob Arent and Navy senior Cody Rome join Wagner as four-time selections in track and field. Arent, who won the 400 hurdles for the third straight season, has a 3.45 GPA in chemistry, while Rome, who also earned an Academic All-League selection in cross country this season, has a 3.55 GPA in applied mathematics.

Bucknell senior Jordan Donaldson (3.77 GPA, accounting), the champion in the 800 for the second straight season, earned his third Academic All-League nod, as did Lehigh senior Kyle Forrest (3.60 GPA, accounting).

Bucknell senior Andrew Powell (3.44 GPA, accounting) and American sophomore John Pope (3.81 GPA, international studies) each earn their second bids to the Academic All-League Team this season after being named to it in the indoor season. Powell was the individual champion in the decathlon.

First-time honorees include Colgate junior Christopher Johnson and Lafayette junior Nick Orzol. Johnson, who won individual titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the outdoor meet, has a 3.40 GPA in history, while Orzol has the Academic All-League Team’s best GPA at 3.95 in electrical and computer engineering.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
