WORCESTER, Mass. — The Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships featured several lead changes on both the men's and women's side on Saturday, but in the end, it was the Bucknell men and the Navy women who hoisted trophies at Hart Track at Holy Cross.
For Bucknell, it is the Bison's third straight men's title and fourth overall, scoring 167 points to fend off second-place Navy, which scored 153 points. Army was third with 149 points and Lehigh finished fourth with 98. Lafayette, which had great success in the sprints, finished fifth with 72 points, and Colgate (20), American (12) and Holy Cross (10) rounded out the final standings.
Navy won the women's outdoor title for the second time in school history and the first time since 2003, scoring 156.6 points to beat defending champion Bucknell, which scored 133.5 points. Lehigh finished in third place with 118 points, followed by Army in fourth with 83 and Lafayette close behind in fifth with 79. Rounding out the standings were Holy Cross in sixth with 55 points, Colgate in seventh with 51 and American in eighth with six.
Lafayette senior Jerome Rudolph was named Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet after sweeping the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while anchoring the Leopards to a victory in the 4x100 relay. Rudolph clocked a Patriot League Championship-record 10.50 in the 100 dash.
Army senior Tom Wagner won a pair of events in being named the Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Meet. Wagner was victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 49-9 and finished first in the high jump in 6-10¼.
Navy freshman Mark Vetere was honored the head coaches as the Male Rookie of the Meet after he won gold in the men's pole vault with a distance of 16-2¾.
Jess Palacio garnered the Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the Meet honor for the third straight year, becoming just the second student-athlete in League history to win a major individual award at three consecutive outdoor championships. Fordham's Lauren Gubicza was named Outstanding Female Athlete of the Meet from 1991-93. Palacio won the 800 and 1,500 events while anchoring Navy's silver medal-winning 4x800 relay foursome.
Lafayette senior Joelle Neilson won a pair of events en route to being named Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Meet. She eclipsed the field by nearly a foot in winning the long jump with a distance of 19-4, and captured the League championship in the triple jump in 38-0¾.
Lisa Junta was named Female Rookie of the Meet after capturing her first League championship in the 10,000 with a time of 36:40.68, while she claimed silver in the 5,000 with a time of 16:58.16.
