2009 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships page
West Point, N.Y. - The Army men and Bucknell women won the 2009 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Army's Shea Stadium. The win gives the Black Knights a 17th overall team title, while the Bucknell women won their 10th team championship.
The win also gave Army the sweep of the 2008 Cross Country and 2009 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Meet honors were also awarded on Saturday, with Army sophomore Domonick Sylve named Outstanding Male Track Athlete of the Meet and Colgate senior Curry Knox named Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the Meet. Sylve is the second straight Black Knight to win the award, while Knox is the first Raider to receive the honor. Navy junior Mark Van Orden was named Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Meet, while Bucknell junior Amy Mantush received Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Van Orden follows fellow Mid Darryl Hunter as the second Navy student-athlete to win the award, while Mantush is the first Bucknell student-athlete to win the honor since Marjorie Grap in 2005.
The 2009 Male Rookie of the Meet honors went to Army freshman Michael Hutchins, and Female Rookie of the Meet honors went to Bucknell freshman Sarah Bella. Hutchins is the second-straight Black Knight to win rookie honors, while Bella is only the second Bison to win the award since it was established in 2005. Army Head Coach Troy Engle was named Men's Coach of the Year in his first year at the helm of the Black Knights program. Colgate Head Coach Laura Nardelli was named Women's Coach of the Year; it was Nardelli's first Women's Coach of the Year honor, as well as the first women's coaching honor bestowed on a Raider coach in Patriot League Championship history.
In the first track event of the day, Bucknell's Andrew Huebner became the first Bison to win the 3,000m steeplechase in Dan Bronfenbrenner in 1999 and 2000 with his IC4A-qualifying time of 9:08.25. Army junior Kirk Chitwood also qualified for IC4As and took second with a time of 9:13.55, while Army senior Joshua Weidner finished in their at 9:21.59.
Navy senior Carey Young was the second-straight Mid to win the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Young finished with a time of 10:58.02, and was followed by teammate Maureen Dooley, a senior, at 11:07.59. Army freshman Jennifer West rounded out the top three with a time of 11:12.85.
In the women's heptathlon, Army sophomore Tonya Stallard beat Navy freshman Arian Davis by 15 points to win the event. Stallard was named the individual champion with 4,252 points, followed by Davis with 4,237 points. Army freshman Christina Johnson came in third with 4,168 points.
The Black Knight men picked up their fifth-straight 4x100m relay win, as sophomores Alfred McDaniel, Domonick Sylve and Jermaine Wright and junior Zachary Batcho won the event in 41.52. Lafayette's team of freshman Nick DeRosa and juniors Adam Ballester, Bradley Williams and Kyle Clayton took second place with a time of 41.68. Both Army and Lafayette qualified for IC4As with their times. Bucknell was the third-place finisher; sophomores John Quezada and Marlon words, freshman Thomas McGarrigle and junior Andrew Yehl finished in 42.71.
On the women's side, the top three finishers all qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 4x100m relay. Colgate seniors Ashley Mecone and Curry Knox, sophomore Michele Miller and junior Ashley Niness won the event in 47.14, making them the first Raider team to ever win the event in Patriot League Championship history. Holy Cross' team of senior Lesley Bautista, sophomores Caitlin White and Margaret Straub and junior Tiffany Reid took second in 47.69. The Bucknell team of juniors Stephanie Evans, Jenn Pierce and Kristin Steele and freshman Christina Muccio took third in 48.19.
In the men's 1,500m run, sophomore Alexis Torre-Santiago finished in first place with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:48.53. Defending champion Carlos Jamieson of American, a senior, also qualified for IC4As and finished second in 3:50.06. Third-place finisher Cody Rome of Navy ran a time of 3:50.52, also qualifying him for IC4As in the event.
For the women, Bucknell freshman Stephanie Fulmer was crowned the individual champion in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:39.48. Navy junior Amy Watson (4:40.96) and Lehigh freshman Lauren Sternick (4:41.60) took second- and third-place honors, respectively.
Army sophomore Domonick Sylve successfully defended his 110m hurdle championship, tying his personal best and winning time from the 2008 League Championships at 14.07. Sylve's time was an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Bucknell junior Andrew Yehl finished second in 14.69, followed by Navy junior Matthew Hanley in third at 15.08.
Colgate senior Curry Knox won the women's 100m hurdles title with a time of 14.31, making her the first Raider in Patriot League Championship history to win the event. Army sophomore Hallie Huggins claimed second place at 14.54, while Navy freshman Ashley Aitken rounded out the top three with a time of 14.58.
In the men's high jump, freshmen swept the top four spots, as Army's Thomas Wagner was crowned the individual champion with a leap of 2.05m (6' 8 ¾"). Wagner's mark qualified him for IC4A Championships. Amry's Michael Hutchins took second at 2.00m (6' 6 ¾"). Bucknell's Andrew Powell (2.00m/6' 6 ¾") and Navy's Joshua Houston (2.00m/6' 6 ¾") rounded out the top four spots.
On the women's side, Bucknell junior Amy Mantush won the high jump with a mark of 1.67m (5' 5 ¾"). Senior Jessica Buzzell claimed second place at 1.65m (5' 5"), while Navy junior Krystina Johnson and Bucknell sophomore Emily Moles shared third place with a marks of 1.60m (5' 3").
After officials broke a first-place tie in the men's triple jump, Bucknell junior Kyle Anthony was crowned the triple jump champion with a leap of 15.01m (49' 3"). Army senior Archie Smith took second with a mark of 15.01m (49' 3"). Both Anthony and Smith qualified for IC4As with their jumps. Senior Adam Jones of Lafayette came in third at 14.77m (48' 5 ½").
Junior Amy Mantush of Bucknell earned the individual championship in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.69m (38' 4 ¼"). Colgate junior Sarah Chabal took second at 11.54m (37' 10 ½") and Navy sophomore Ashley Bucholz earned third at 11.41m (37' 5 1/4'").
Army freshman Michael Hutchins won the men's 400m dash with a time of 48.73. Hutchins was followed by teammate Christopher Michels, a sophomore, at 48.95 and Bucknell senior Kerry Boyle, the defending champion, at 49.19.
In the women's 400m dash, Navy junior Abigail Gesecki became the first Mid crowned the event's individual champion since Tineisha Davis won from 2002-05 with a time of 56.81. Colgate sophomore Michele Miller earned second place with 56.95. Senior Lauren Courtney of Holy Cross rounded out the top three at 57.92.
Army junior Adam Schwartz finished first in the men's discus with a throw of 49.41m (162' 1"). Freshman Chris Boniwell of Navy took second in the event with a mark of 49.11m (161' 1"), while Army junior Kurt Bujewski finished third at 47.61m (156' 2"). All three qualified for IC4As with their throws.
The Bison went 1-2 in the women's discus, with freshman Sarah Bella earning the title with a throw of 42.49m (139' 5"). Teammate Chelsey Musante took second place in the event with a throw of 40.22m (131' 11"). The Mids' Joy Nameth finished in third at 39.86m (130' 9").
Senior E.J. Schuck became the second Lehigh student-athlete to win the decathlon since Vaclav Malek won in 2004 and 2005 with a score of 6,348 points. Juniors Ryan White (6,274) and Thomas Vogler (6,009) of Bucknell earned second- and third-pace finishes, respectively.
Army sophomore and 2008 Rookie of the Meet Alfred McDaniel defended his 100m dash title with an 10.68 showing. Lafayette junior Kyle Clayton finished second at 10.71. Both McDaniel and Clayton qualified for IC4As with their performances. In third place, Army sophomore Domonick Sylve finished at 11.86.
Colgate's Curry Knox won her second individual title in the women's 100m dash with a time of 11.70 after winning it in 2006 with a time of 12.01. Knox' time set a Patriot League Championship Meet record, which was previously set in 2008 by Army's Ebony Thomas. Knox also qualified for NCAA Regionals with her time. Holy Cross' Tiffany Reid was second at 11.84, while Navy sophomore Ashley Boykin took third at 12.35.
Bucknell's Timothy Medlock easily surpassed the IC4A-qualifying mark in the men's shot put with a distance of 16.29m (53' 5 ½"). The second place finisher was Army junior Matthew Nulk (15.80m/51' 10"), while Bison freshman Tom Barr took third (15.72m/51' 7").
Freshman Sarah Bella of Bucknell earned first-place honors in the women's shot put with a mark of 13.91m (45' 7 ¾"). Bella is the first Bison to win the event since Marjorie Grap won in 2005. Army senior Geryah White was the event's runner up at 13.65m (44' 9 ½"), while Bucknell junior Chelsey Musante picked up third with a mark of 13.61m (44' 8").
In the men's 200 dash, junior Adam Ballester of Lafayette beat Army sophomore Jermaine Wright by five hundredths of a second to win the individual title at 21.96. Wright (22.01) subsequently finished just one-hundredth of a second ahead of third-place finisher junior Kyle Clayton of Lafayette (22.02).
Holy Cross junior Tiffany Reid beat out Colgate's Curry Knox for the women's 200m dash title, running a 24.32 to Knox's 24.69. Both Reid and Knox qualified for ECAC Championships in the event with their times. Colgate sophomore Michele Miller finished third at 25.17.
The men's 800m run champion was Army junior Andrew Tingan, the first Black Knight to win the event since Clay Schwabe won it in 2001. Tingan was followed by Army senior Andrew Ferrara in 1:53.02 and Bucknell sophomore Clay Smith in 1:53.63.
Senior Megan Hathaway of Bucknell won the women's 800m run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:11.17. Seniors Sarah Serwo of Lehigh (2:11.82) and Jenny Dalzell of Bucknell (2:12.69) took second and third, respectively.
Lehigh senior Scott Robinson won his second 400m hurdles championship after winning it in 2006. Robinson's time of 53.19 qualified him for IC4As in the event. Colgate junior Phil Natoli (53.85) and Bucknell freshman Robert Arent (54.04) finished second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Jamie Leacock of Bucknell narrowly defeated Army senior Lauryn Wierda in the women's 400m hurdles, clipping Wierda with a time of 1:03.39. Wierda finished with a mark of 1:03.59, followed by Colgate junior Ashley Niness at 1:04.59.
In the men's 5,000m run, Navy sophomore Andrew Hanko won first place with a time of 14:40.48. Senior Brad Mish of Holy Cross picked up his second silver medal of the competition, finishing the 5,000m in 14:51.77. Senior Matthew Leyndyke took third in 14:53.17.
American freshman Octavia Rinehardt caught Navy junior Amy Watson on the last lap of the women's 5,000m, and became the first Eagle to win the event since All-American Keira Carlstrom won in 2003 and 2004. Rinehardt finished with a time of 17:17.11, while Watson finished in 17:31.13. Colgate sophomore Julie Tarallo rounded out the top three with a time of 17:37.04.
In the final two events of the day, the Army men and Bucknell women won their respective 4x400m relays. For the men, Army's team of junior Andrew Tingan, seniors Andrew Ferrara and Larry Choate and sophomore Christopher Michels won the event in 3:17.57. Lafayette's team of freshman Nick DeRosa and juniors Adam Ballester, Sean Casey and Bradley Williams were the runners-up at 3:18.36.
On the women's side, Bucknell's team of seniors Jenny Dalzell and Megan Hathaway and juniors Jenn Pierce and Kalle James-Wintjen won the relay in 3:53.21. The Bison were followed by the team of junior Ashley Niness, freshman Alex Atkinson, senior Andrea Fugazot and sophomore Michele Miller of Colgate with a time of 3:53.79.
