Annapolis, Md. - The Navy men's outdoor track and field team (3-1) will be facing intense competition at this weekend's Tom Jones Memorial Classic at the Percy Beard Track Facility in Gainesville, Fla. The meet will be hosted by No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 9 Nebraska will also be in the field. Additional teams include Michigan, TCU, UCF and Princeton, along with a number of unattached and professional athletes.
Florida won the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championship and was the runner-up at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Navy is sending down its top throwers, sprinters and hurdlers to compete. Seniors Patrick Norwood and Nicholas Porter, along with junior Christopher Ricks, will compete in the hammer throw. All three have hit IC4A marks this season and another IC4A-qualifier, Zachary Duncavage, throw the discus.
Junior Alexander Jackson will compete in both the 200m and the 400m and sophomore Kolton Kempel will also run the 400m. Sophomore Mitch Simmonds will compete in the 110m hurdles.
Senior David Ash and juniors Lucas Connelly and George Stevenson will run the 800m.
Navy's top distance runners will not be competing at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic.
Navy has moved up one spot to No. 4 in the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll. Fellow Patriot League schools Bucknell (No. 7) and Lehigh (No. 10) are also ranked in the Mid-Atlantic and Army is No. 2 in the Northeast.
The Mids will return to action next week at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pa. April 21-22.
